The Adult Journey
Mindfulness Meditation
May I be filled with loving kindness May I be well
May I be Peaceful and at ease May I be happy
The privilege of a lifetime is being who you are.
Joseph Campbell
Heros Journey
If you follow your bliss, you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while, waiting for you, and the life that you ought to be living is the one you are living. Wherever you are-if you are following your bliss, you are enjoying that refreshment, that life within you, all the time.

Adult Development Stages
Novice Phase Novice phase of early adulthood lasts about 15 years (Age:17 to 33) Early Adult Transition, Entering the adult world, and the Age Thirty Transition.
Four major tasks of this phase 1) Forming a dream and giving it a place in the life structure. 2) Forming a Mentor relationship 3) Forming an occupation 4) Forming love relationships, marriage/family.
Adult Development Stages Novice Phase Forming a Dream - vague sense of self in adult world - quality of vision, an imagined possibilities that generates
excitement and vitality. - at start it is poorly articulated and only tenuously
connected to reality. - developmental task is giving it greater definition and
finding ways to live it out. - Dream of adult life arises as a transitional phenomenon
in early adult transition, entering the adult world "I AM"
Adult Development Stages
Novice Phase Age : 17-22 The Early Adult Transition: Moving from Pre to Early Adulthood.
Task 1: To start moving out of the pre-adult world, to question the nature of that world and one's place in it, to modify or terminate existing relationships with important persons, groups and institutions; various kinds of separations, endings and transformations must be made as one completes an entire season.
Task 2: Make preliminary step into the adult world, explore possibilities, consolidate an initial adult identity, test choices for adult living, transition ends when she gets beyond the boundary and begins to create a life in the adult world.
Adult Development Stages
Novice Phase
Age 22-28 The First Adult Life Structure: Entering the Adult World
Task 1: To explore the possibilities for adult living, to keep the
options open, avoid strong commitments and maximize the
alternatives.
Task 2: Create a stable life structure: become more responsible
"Make something out of my life.
Note: Mentor relationship is one of the most complex and developmentally
important relationships in a young persons life. The crucial function is to support and facilitate the realization of the dream, believing in him/her, sharing the
youthful dream and giving it blessing, helping to define the newly emerging self in
its newly discovered world.
Adult Development Stages Novice Phase
Finding a Mentor A true mentor/protégé relationship only happens one or two times in an individuals life. The relationship has an exclusive quality and usually last for a number of years. The mentor is usually older than the protégé, Levinson states roughly 8-15 yrs.
Four Phases of Mentoring Relationship 1 Initiation/mutual admiration, 2 Cultivation/developmental phase 3 Disillusionment/ separation phase, and 4 Transformation/redefinition phase.
Adult Development Stages Novice Phase
Age: 28-33 The age Thirty Transition: Changing the first Life Structure If I am to change my life, if there are things in it I want to modify or exclude or things missing, start for it soon or it will be to late.
Adult Development Stages
Age: 33-40 The Second Adult Life Structure: Settling Down
Task 1: Tries to establish a niche in society, anchor his/her life more firmly, develops competence in chosen craft.
Task 2: S/he works at making it, affirmation by the tribe.
Adult Development Stages
Age: 40-45 (50) The Mid-Life Transition
Moving from early adulthood to middle adulthood. What have I done with my life? What am I getting out of it? What do I want? Usually a period of great struggle and possible change. Must make choices and set priorities, every choice I make involves the rejection of many other possibilities. Period of reappraising, exploring, testing choices and creating the basis for a new life.
Adult Development Stages
Age: 40-45 (50) The Mid-Life Transition
Task 1
a) to question the life structure again; " What have I done
with my life? What do I really get from and give to my wife,
children,, friends, work, community, and self? What is it that
I want for myself and others?
b) To desire a life in which her/his actual desires, values,
talents and aspirations can be expressed.
c) To feel the stirrings of powerful forces within her/himself
and perhaps modify or drastically change the structure.
Adult Development Stages Age: 40-45 (50) The Mid-Life Transition
Task 2 Experiencing a disparity between what s/he has gained in an inner sense from living within a particular structure and what s/he wants for himself.
Task 3 Having a sense of bodily decline. Task 4 Having a more vivid recognition of one's mortality. Task 5 Experiencing the sense of aging. Task 6 Emergence and integration of the more feminine aspects
of the self.
Adult Development Stages
Age: 40-45 (50) The Mid-Life Transition
Task 7 Exploring the Shadow
Task 8 Learning to love formerly devalued aspects of self.
Task 9 Beginning to realize that the summer of life is ending
and autumn is fast approaching.
Task 10 Noticing a slight drop in maximal level of
body functioning.
Life is without meaning. You bring the meaning to it.
The meaning of life is Whatever you ascribe it to be.
Being alive is the meaning.

When we talk about settling the world's problems, we're barking up the wrong tree.
The world is perfect. It's a mess. It has always been a mess.
We are not going to change it.
Our job is to straighten out our own lives.
We must be willing to let go of the life we have planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us.
A bit of advice Given to a young Native American At the time of his initiation: As you go the way of life, You will see a great chasm JUMP It is not as far as you think.
