forum 123 social/emotional aspect disability
In addition to the assigned reading of Chapters 1-3 in the text, read the first page, paragraph 2, of the Preface. Note the authors specify three (3) primary (or "overriding") ideas of their approach (and ours in this class) to learning about and working with persons with disabilities. Also, read the authors' list of six (6) "guiding principles" on the last page (xvii) of the Preface.
After viewing each video of 3, identify the "key words" for each idea and then for each of guiding principle and discuss which are demonstrated in this short video. Then, in at least two statements, briefly describe how you believe these ideas and principles were demonstrated in this video for you. Your statements should be your own critique of the usefulness of this video toward your expectations for this class. Here's an example of the first idea and first point (you will do the rest), followed by my personal critique:
EXAMPLE OF CORRECT ENTRY:
Key Words of Idea (1): disability, understood, diversity. Key Words of Principle (1): capable, potential, important.
EXAMPLE BY USING THE KEY WORDS FROM ABOVE IN THE SENTENCES BELOW FOR EACH VIDEO SHOWN BELOW
The video featured people with different types of disabilities, some physical and some cognitive, as capable people, some of whom appeared to be in important jobs. For me, idea of understanding people with disabilities are just as diverse as people without disabilities, such as a blind white woman and a black gay man in a wheelchair. Also, I saw potential shown in the close-up of the athlete in the wheelchair playing basketball. The close-up of his face--a man who appeared to possibly be Hispanic and with no disability--panned out to show him in a wheelchair.

Class Participation: Discussion Forum (3) - Case Management Basics
This is about a 43 minute video. It's not terribly exciting--as it is a presenter talking about important issues related to general case management that include various federal programs such as HIPAA, Medicaid waivers, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) waiver and other waiver programs (as named in New Jersey as of 2014--see same programs by different names in Louisiana at http://www.dhh.louisiana.gov/index.cfm/directory/detail/699/catid/154), assurances for effective case management (very important to addressing social and emotional needs/issues of persons with disabilities).
This is GREAT information when considering case management that involves federal and/or state funding for disabilities services. (The presenter uses a PowerPoint, but I was not able to transcribe it for you in time to post--so if you are interested in doing so in a Word document, please post in your discussion response!)
What's so important about the content of this YouTube presentation on funding is that most of those we encounter who have various disabilities must depend partly or, for some, entirely on these funding sources. Social workers, nurses, and other allied health professions (such as PT, OT, mental health counselors) must be aware of these sources--not only to assure that a person with a disability who can benefit from these funding sources can receive them.
But, important to the agency or private practitioner providing case management, is knowing the requirements for documentation by federal and/or state funding sources. (I have actually had a Medicare evaluation of my service documentation when I was privately providing (and billing) a Medicare reimbursed mental health counseling and case management services to a client on Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)--and I was very glad I was "up" on Medicare and Medicaid documentation requirements!)
So, listen well and take notes!
