Rationale for Using or Not Using in Interdisciplinary Instruction

The John Dewey’s Theory

This theory views curriculum as a platform that should produce students who are capable of dealing effectively with the current modern world (Miller, 2018). These theory argues that a student should not be limited to the laid down curriculum but also how he or she views their world should be considered. Dewey characterizes student’s behavior using the four instincts that is constructive, social, artistic and expressive. This theory attempts to develop a link between student’s life and subjects. The reason for using this theory is that how a child views the world is considered and it can lead to establishment of progressive schools. However, this theory is hard to implement in reality because each child has his or her own view on the world therefore, it is difficult to establish a standard curriculum. The theorists had a belief that education is a key tool of reforming the society. The goal of socialization was set to be achieved through the ability of the individual to use education to improve their intelligence. The future of the individuals is not based race, gender, socio-economic status or any other factor (Schiro, 2012). The theory argues that it would be necessary curriculum designed to address this differences and other vices such as corruption. Using this curriculum theory, a new generation would be raised which would have informed enough to deal with the current differences and also the prevailing vices. The Developmentalism theory

This theory focuses attention on the development child’s behavioral and emotional qualities (Price, 2018). The theory argues that the children’s characteristics and behaviors can be used as a source of developing curriculum such that the curriculum is child-centered. Given that this theory is child centered, the children ideas will be presented in the curriculum. However, the theory does not consider some important factors such as unique instructions based on the origin of the child and also some children require special care therefore, they require a customized curriculum. The social efficiency theory

This theory aimed at designing a curriculum that optimizes the social usefulness of a person within a society (Tahirsylaj, 2018). The theory believed that education was one of the most efficient tool to control the society. Scientific evaluations such as IQ tests would be done to evaluate students to help in guiding them towards their forecasted role in the society. It contributed to the introduction of junior and vocational high schools in order to link particular life activities with each student’s future role in the society. This curriculum theory introduced the aspect of evaluation which brings in the aspect of efficiency. However, this theory cannot be used due to its over-emphasis on testing and differentiating students based on the test results. The Macdonald’s Theory

It is one of the major value-oriented theory. In this theory, curriculum is defined as a social system which is responsible for producing an instruction plan. In this social system formal learning and teaching takes place. The theory defines teaching as a personality system where the teacher acts in a particular way to facilitate learning. On the other side, learning is viewed as a personality system where students are involved in unique task-oriented behavior. In interdisciplinary instruction this theory can be used since the educator or the instructor can act in a manner to facilitate learning without not only using the normal teaching methodology but also other methods. In the current world, children find themselves limited within classroom content thus making it difficult to discover their interests in the environments. The children’s ability to learn from the surrounding environment and the impact of the environment on children’s behavior is factually hindered since they are not given that chance to interact with it. Therefore, children end up pursuing some subjects or areas which they are not interested in. The John Dewey theory is one of the famous curriculum theory which embraces child-centered approach to curriculum. Applying the John Dewey theory in the modern curriculum would enable children to uncover their potential by understanding their environment in what is commonly referred to as experiential learning. Children learn effectively when given an opportunity to learn previous experiences (Wheeler, 2016). According to Dewey’s theory, linking the present content to the past events and the knowledge that the students have would enable the student to understand more. In the modern world, this aspect can be incorporated to foster learning or develop an improved curriculum which may include introduction of educational videos. For instance, with the current technology, the previous experiences can be simulated to make educational videos to enable students to learn perfectly. A child learns well when he or she takes an active role in the process unlike when he or she has a passive role. Children’s active involvement in the learning process makes them curious to understand why things happen the way they do. This makes them able to uncover their abilities. This is because the context of social learning is facilitated. The John Dewey’s theory argues that educators should only be facilitators and not instructors since the student’s also have their own view of the world and each one has their own way of thinking (Miller, 2018). Therefore, educators should facilitate the students to discover their abilities and also they should be allowed to interact with the environment.
