FOR: Kim Woods - Research Paper
FOR METHODS SECTION OF PAPER
1. Describe what your topic is, phrasing it as a research question. For me, the topic that I have chosen for this study is close to my heart. It is anchored on one of the social issues that affect the society on a daily life basis. I do not know a single person who has not been affected by the issue of divorce, in one aspect or another. The issue of whether divorce is the best option when there are marital problems can spark different debates among different individuals. As a research question, it would possibly be phrased as “Are there contributing factors that determine if divorce is the best option when a couple is facing marital problems?” I think a lot of discussion points exist and multiple variables will come into play as I go week to week.
2. Identify variables (one DV, at least one IV), which you have found in the GSS data set. The variables for this research are directly related to the objectives that the study is set on achieving. My dependent variable “DV” is “divorce” and my independent variables “IV” is “hapmar” = happiness of a marriage.
“hapmar”: “Taking things all together, how would you describe your marriage? Would you say that your marriage is very happy, pretty happy, or not too happy?”
Deeper discussion and studies could be whether a person’s age, having children, or even over-all happiness would be determining factors when asking respondents the question.
At this beginning stage, I believe that the variables chosen are the key factors that would be considered in whether a divorce is the best option with a troubled marriage. The variables will help explore different dimensions of the topic in depth. In doing so, the objectives of the study will be met and also existing knowledge gaps will be filled.
4. Explain why you think there is a correlation or a relationship . The variables chosen are related in that a change in either will affect the other. For instance, the age of a respondent or whether they have children could have an impact as to whether the person believes divorce can be the best option if a marriage has troubles.
Frequencies
The chart below provides statistics of those surveyed that have happiness in their marriage. Out of the 1,974 people surveyed, 589 of them, which is 65.7%, indicated they were very happy. There were 282 people, or 31.4%, who said they were pretty happy and 26 people, or 2.9%, who answered that they were not happy. The remaining number of those surveyed were inapplicable. As further indicated below, the means, or average was 1.37, while the median was 1.00 and the mode was 1.
