Formative Course Evaluation Paper

Due Date: Monday, October 31 at 11:59 PM

Length: 3-5 pages double-spaced

In this assignment you will conduct a formative evaluation of the class so far. Formative evaluations are focused on improving processes. I am asking for you to provide feedback on several items, corresponding to three prompts. To do well on this assignment, you need to answer each of the prompts AND provide detailed explanations. The most important thing you can do for me in this assignment is to provide specific, actionable feedback.

1) What helped me learn best was…What would have helped me learn better? This prompt asks you to identify materials or activities in the course that were most helpful to your learning. Materials and activities could be things like the book, lectures, homework, discussions or videos.

· What materials or activities in the course helped you learn the most? Please explain HOW and WHY these things helped you to learn.

· What materials or activities could be added to the course that would have helped you to learn more? Please explain WHY adding these materials would help you to learn.

2) High Low. This prompt asks you to identify which class was the best/worst for you. In answering this prompt, I want you to go into detail. Why was the class effective/ineffective?

· High. Think back over the course- what class was the MOST useful to you? Explain, please.

· Low. In which class were you most lost? What about that class/topic was difficult? Explain, please.

3) Plant Grow Chop. This prompt asks you to make three recommendations. Plant is a recommendation for a NEW topic (hence plant). Grow is a recommendation for a topic to expand (hence grow). Chop is a recommendation for a topic to chop. You MUST make recommendations, even if you think that course is fine as is. There is always room for improvement in a class, so I want recommendations, regardless.

· Plant. “Gee, I wish Dr. HM would have included this topic, but he didn’t.” Think hard about this. If you could add a NEW topical area, what would it be?

· Grow. “Gee, I wish Dr. HM had covered that topic more.” If you could expand a topical area in the course, what would it be? This could be an expansion of an existing topic (like surveys). But here I want specifics: What kind of content or activities would you recommend as part of this expansion.

· Chop. “Gee, Dr. HM should really cut that material, it wasn’t useful to me.” If you could chop any of the topics in the course, which one would be on the chopping block for you. Please explain why.
