Completing a research proposal demonstrate the skills which will be necessary to conduct research for the dissertation. Crafting a proposal helps to consolidate the students’ understanding of the research principles addressed in the module, including:

· Critical engagement with the principles of educational research

· The positionality of the researcher

· Critical appraisal of educational policy and practice

1. Students will be provided with a proposal framework which they will use to outline what the proposed research is about; what it is trying to find out or achieve and how it will go about doing that.

2. The process of developing the research proposal will involve planning, designing and setting up the research, including placing it in context and connecting it to relevant literature.

3. The proposal  must  be specifically linked to the students’ intended dissertation topic.

THIS IS THE FORMAT OF THE RESEARCH PROPOSAL 3000 words

Please the Methodology section should have lots of academic references at all times because it’s part of a master’s program requirements There should also be sub-research questions included. We need about 20 references. Harvard style

Extracts from a research proposal

Research title

This will be a working title which is best worded as a question which should be in two parts, the first part is a statement of the topic and the second part is the research question

Professional identity and professionalism in prison education: are prison educators’ perceptions of their professional identity influenced by the policies and politics of the penal system?

Abstract

This is an overview of the contents of the proposal and should be 100-150 words. Imagine that you have to describe your research to someone in 30 seconds.

The propose research will be an investigation into professional identity and professionalism in an educational organisation and whether this is affected by policies and organisational politics. The research will focus on a specific groups of educators who are teaching in a prison education department in the north of England. It is proposed that the research will be undertaken by gathering data via in-depth semi-structured interviews with prison educators. The data will be then be analysed using a thematic narrative approach. My current role as an insider-researcher gives me access to potential participants but also presents ethical issues regarding confidentiality and anonymity. These issues have been considered and possible solutions identified.

Introduction

This section introduces the research area/topic and briefly states the aims of the research, the rationale for the research and the main research question and sub questions, which can be a bullet point list.

The aim of the research is to investigate the perceptions of a group of prison educators of their professional identity and what, if any, influence the policies and politics of the penal system may have on those perceptions. The issues that are faced by the prison education workforce are not widely known, as prison education is hidden from public view. Its purpose remains not only a mystery to outsiders, but often also to those responsible for its management and those employed to deliver it.

Conceptualisation

This section is where you define the key concepts that are part of your research, you can also include references to the key theories in this section.

The concepts of professional as an occupational category, professionalism as the process by which individuals become professionals and professionalisation as 'the process by which occupations become professions' (Millerson, 1964: 10) originated in profession discourse. The research will use Foucault’s (1969:1972) theory of discourse and discursive formation to trace the historical development of profession discourse. To examine the early concepts of ‘professional’ and ‘professionalism’ it will use the works of Spencer (1896), Tawney (1921) and Flexner (1915).

Professional Context

This section is relevant if the research is related to your professional practice as a practitioner, for example as a teacher or a manager in a setting or as a volunteer. In this section you can refer to yourself as I, if this section is not relevant to your research then do not include it.

I began my teaching career in 2000, when I was employed by the local adult education (AE) service to teach maths in a local prison education department. My current position is …..

Organisational Context

This section is relevant if the research is related to, or being carried out in a specific organisation, e.g. a school or college. You should include a brief description of the setting, without naming it, and what its purpose is, if this section is not relevant to your research then do not include it.

The research will be taking place in a male local prison in the north of England. The research location has recently undergone a number of changes that have impacted on educators and their managers. For example, the capacity of the prison was recently expanded by 40% with the building of four new wings and an extension to the existing facilities, including new classrooms.

Policy Context

This section is relevant if the research is related to a specific policy or group of policies which can be cited. If this section is not relevant to your research then do not include it.

The prison education workforce are bound by three sets of policies, those applying to FE, those applying specifically to prison education and those applying to the prison service. The recommendations of the review, Unlocking Potential: A review of education in prisons (2016) were that prison education should include more personal and social development (PSD) courses and more arts, music and sports activities alongside the basics of maths and English.

Methodology

This is the section where you outline the philosophical approach that the research will take along with the methods and data collection strategies that will be used. You also need to include details of who the participants will be, how they will be chosen and why as well as considering some of the limitations of the research and the ethical aspects of the research. This might include your positionality and/or role as an insider-researcher. Each of these research decisions will, be dealt with quite briefly in order to stay within the word limit but each one needs to be justified with references to research theory and practice that are to be found in research texts. Subheadings can be used, as in the example below, to give structure to this section but are not compulsory.

Philosophical basis of the research

The epistemological approach of the research will be interpretivist as it concerned with the ….. The research will adopted a constructivist ontological position, as the …..

Method

PART C: RECRUITMENT & CONSENT PROCESSES

Describe how potential participants in the study will be identified and recruited and who will do this. How participants are approached and recruited is an important consideration to ensure that they are not induced or coerced into participation. The way participants are identified may have a bearing on whether the results can be generalised. Please explain each point and give sub-groups of participants separately if appropriate. also say who will identify, approach and recruit participants. Remember too to append all advertising material (posters, emails etc) as part of your application.

C.1 Describe how potential participants in the study be identified, approached and recruited and who will do this:

(i) identified:

(ii) approached: (i.e. how will you tell prospective participants about the research and invite them to participate? Also, will you speak to them face to face or use email or telephone?) It may be appropriate to approach participants and ask them to sign up on the spot for low risk research; however, giving participants a length of time (at least a week) to consider is usually necessary for riskier projects. *

(iii) recruited: (i.e. how will participants sign up to be participants in the research? e.g. through returning a signed consent for to the researcher) *

C2. Will the research involve any element of deception?

Yes/no (delete as appropriate)

Copies of any written consent form, written information and all other explanatory material should accompany this application . The information sheet should make explicit that participants can withdraw from the research at any time, if the research design permits.

C4. Describe whether participants will be able to withdraw from the study, and up to what point (e.g. if data is to be anonymised). If withdrawal is not possible, explain why not.

Any limits to withdrawal, e.g. once the results have been written up or published, should be made clear to participants in advance, preferably by specifying a date after which withdrawal would not be possible. Make sure that the information provided to participants (e.g. information sheets, consent forms) is consistent

C5. Will individual or group interviews/ questionnaires discuss any topics or issues that might be sensitive, embarrassing or upsetting, or is it possible that criminal or other disclosures requiring action could take place during the study (e.g. during interviews or group discussions)? The information sheet should explain under what circumstances action may be taken.

Yes/no (delete as appropriate)

If yes, give details of procedures in place to deal with these issues.

PART D: RESEARCH DATA (Researchers must comply with the General Data Protection Regulations)

Manual files (e.g. paper copies)

Private company computers

Personal computers

Other

D2. How will you ensure personal data on consent forms (e.g. names, addresses) will be stored securely and disposed of when the study is complete?

Nobody other than the researcher should have access to these. If consent forms cannot be digitalised and encrypted, they must be secured in a locked cabinet or room to which only the researcher has access. Ensure you do not put any words, letters, images or numbers on the consent forms which could potentially link the person to the data you have collected.
