Format and Grading (double spaced; 12 point font; and 1-inch margins as stated in the syllabus)

When you submit your literature review, please turn in:

A. A cover page (2 points)

B. One page outline of your 4 parts (8 points)

a. Thesis

b. Historical or cultural context: a sentence briefly provides the information on the topic such as who, what, when

c. Sub-categories: Provide a topic sentence

d. Conclusion: What is the most important thing that you learn about this topic.

C. The literature review itself (60 points)

Your paper should have 4 parts as you provide in your general outline:

1. Introduction with a thesis

2. A brief historical account or cultural context of your topic. If your topic is on a historical event or a person, provide a brief history. If your topic is about a cultural, social, ritual practice, etc., provide a brief cultural or contextual information.

3. Divide your thesis into sub-topics. Your footnotes go along to support these sub-categories. This is the main part of your literature review. Creatively incorporate those stock phrases of a literature review genre. In this section, you write about authors and their researches on your subject. Do not hide their names in the footnotes, but make their names, their books and articles as a central part of a topic sentence.

4. Conclusion:

It can be all or one of these:

Your evaluation of the past trends

Your evaluation of the current trend(s)

Your observation of the bias in the field

Your praise of the critical objective of these studies.

· 50 points on theme development (Choice of cited research is appropriate to paper topic; paper contains three or more thoroughly discussed supporting the thesis; paper contains only on-topic information; paper shows a point of view and/or analysis/synthesis rather than a collection of cut-and-paste book reviews).

· 10 discretionary points for particularly good writing, an exceptional grasp of the topic, and so on.

D. Bibliography and footnotes (10 points) (I will take 0.5 point off for each mistake of not following the Chicago Style of Manual).
