Context: Historically, there were limited services available for veterans. Often veterans who were traumatized by war would withdraw from their families and society, left to cope with their pain alone. Research on trauma and PTSD is evolving, informing assessment and treatment interventions. However, even as treatments advance, people cannot benefit from them if they are unaware or cannot access services. The Department of Veterans Affairs web site  http://www.va.gov/ and chapters in Once a Warrior, Always a Warrior cover a broad range of information that could be useful to trauma survivors and their families. It is important to begin more fully integrating your understanding of this information.

Description: In this activity you will write a two- to three-page letter in a format as if it were being sent snail mail rather than just as an informal email. It should have a beginning, middle, and ending that delivers the information in a clear and useful manner. This letter can be to a veteran and/or family member summarizing the services that are available to help her adjust from active duty to civilian status. This could be someone you know or a more generic letter. In your letter, be sure to comment on both clinical services that are available as well as things that promote overall health and well-being.
