Formal Essay 1: Rhetorical Analysis English 1143 Length: 3 Full Pages
The objective of this assignment is to rhetorically analyze a meme. Remember, analysis generally refers to the process of examining how the parts contribute to the whole.
For this assignment, you will 1-3 memes and analyze them based on its rhetorical context and the appeal and techniques it uses to achieve its rhetorical goal.
Using your ICE as a first draft, expand your essay into an argument that is 3 pages typed, double-spaced, in 12-point font. You should argue for a link between specific rhetorical choices of the author/creator in the meme and their effects on the audience within the rhetorical context.
Assignment:
Your final essay should do the following:
· Include an introduction that provides a clear description of your meme.
· Assert a clear position in a thesis and support it throughout the paper
· Provide concrete supporting details from the meme for your analysis
· Be sure to consider logos/ethos/pathos, rhetorical devices, and subject/speaker/purpose/audience. Your paragraphs should focus on how techniques the speaker uses are effective in his specific rhetorical context.
· Avoid using “I statements” or personal statements such as “I think,” “I feel” (except, if you wish, in the conclusion)
· Use MLA formatting.

T, Sept. 25th- Bring two copies of your rough draft to class for peer review
***Remember that peer review workshops count as participation grades***
Th, Sept. 27th – Final Draft Due. Submit the paper electronically on D2L by the beginning of class. Unless otherwise arranged with me, papers received after that time will be counted late and will lose 5 points from their total grades per day.
