Course Description This course will examine historical and philosophical foundations of health ethics, commonly referred to as Bioethics. Students will explore contemporary values, issues and controversies surrounding and relevant to current bioethical issues as they relate to both the individual and society. Topics will include discussion and definition of morality and philosophy, the establishment of ethical codes, fundamental theories of ethical decision making, research ethics, patient rights, death and dying, reproductive medicine, economic in healthcare issues, society versus the individual and biogenetic engineering technology. In addition, the student will gain greater appreciation for processes of critical thinking concepts while examining their own attitudes and values related to discussion topics and assignments. 1. Examine contemporary bioethical issues to include: research ethics, patient rights, abortion, emergency contraception, the right to live and die, assisted reproductive technologies, prenatal diagnosis, organ transplants, costs of health care, physician assisted suicide, and genetic engineering.
