FNAR 202 Modern Art SPRING 2019

PAPER ASSIGNMENT Due: Sunday April 28, 11:59PM

You will be writing a research paper for this course. A research paper entails the student doing research on a topic. As you are researching, you should be forming a thesis. The research you use for your paper will support your thesis. Below I have listed paper topics. You will not be able to formulate a thesis unless you first do research on the topic. Some angles you may want to consider as you are researching your topic and crafting a thesis:

• Is there a political aspect to the work • Has new iconography been created • Are there social messages within the work • Is the work tied into the artist’s biography

As you are working on your paper, please keep in mind that this is a research paper and that you must at all times document your sources. If you fail to do so, it will be considered plagiarism and will result in a failing grade for this class and academic discipline. If you only cite some of your sources you will automatically receive a 65/100 for your paper grade. You must cite all your sources in Chicago Manual Style. For a full description of plagiarism, see the last six pages of the syllabus. You must use at least four sources and those sources can only be books or peer- reviewed journal articles. You must have at least one book as a source, and you are not allowed to use your textbook, encyclopedias or dictionaries. Do not use any internet sources. Databases you can access through the library website are acceptable. But sites such as wikipedia.org or google searches (to name a few) are not acceptable. For each internet or banned source you use, I will deduct 20 points off your final grade.

The paper should be 5-7 pages in length. The paper must be in Times New Roman script and it must be in 12-point font and double-spaced. It must also have standard margins. The paper must be submitted in Microsoft Word format, or I will give you a zero for the assignment. If you decide not to follow these format guidelines, the grade on your paper will be affected. Pay attention to grammar, organization and mechanics. Use your computer’s spell/grammar check. I will be taking points off for excessive grammatical and mechanical errors. I will also be deducting points off your paper if it is poorly organized. Your paper must include a Works Cited or Bibliography page. This does not count towards your 5-7 pages. Your paper must include images. Any time you mention an image in your paper, you must provide a reproduction of it. These do not count toward your 5-7 pages. If you have difficulty with writing, schedule an appointment in the Writing Center for assistance. The hours and locations of the Writing Center can be found at: http://www.luc.edu/writing/home/#contact Paper Topics: If you wish to write about something not on this list, please consult me first.
