FAD DIETS
When one looks in a magazine what does one see? It is usually the same stick figure models who claim they lead a “healthy lifestyle.” Society today has pressured us into being unnaturally thin and giving us everyway possible to lose the weight except for the right way. Of course the American obesity rate is at a very dangerous high with 5.4 million people already obese and 7 million that are at high risk of joining them (“Fixing a Fat Nation”). 1.____________ All fad Diets are not healthy and if one wants to lose weight they need to do it the old fashion way.
People have been dieting for years and along with the healthy diets the fad diets have been a main source of diet since at least the 1000’s. William the Conqueror was reported to have gone on a liquid diet. He would lie in bed and drink booze all day (Smith and Johnson). 2._______________ It just goes to show that even back in the 1000’s when life was a lot more slow paced, that even then people wanted a quick fix to their fat problem.
In 1960 a man named Dr. Robert C. Atkins opened up his own practice in New York City. “He would tell his patients to do a very low-carbohydrate intake which he had formulated from a series of articles in the American Medical Association. (History of the Atkins Diet).” 3. (3 pts)________________________
“The only way to lose weight and keep it off is to have a healthy, balanced diet, and exercise”(Barbra Hosley). 4._____________ Diet and exercise have been pounded into everyone’s head for years and years. One is required to do physical activity from kindergarten to senior year of high school (Barns).
Though fad diets may sound like a quick and easy way to shed a couple of pounds they are still very harmful to ones body. There is only one way to lose weight and that is by having a good diet and exercising (faddiet.com). 5.____________ America’s problem is wanting the easy way out, but hopefully everyone will realize what it is that needs to be done to live a healthier life.
