Abstract

Counseling is a profession that has helped many people to know their mental issues and deal with them. The counseling process focused on a male student aged seventeen. The client was showing signs of mental illness, substance disorder, and academic issues. The setting of the process fell in the category of private practice. Norm-referenced testing was the type of setting that was used. Pediatric Symptom Checklist-17 and Disruptive Behavior Rating Scale were the two types of assessments that were utilized. In the process of determining the assessment methods, the education of the client was considered. During the preparation of the process, I considered all the needs of the client. I also considered all ethical and cultural considerations when implementing the help.

a. Counseling setting, types of services provided, and the demographic characteristics of the clientele served.

i. Counseling Setting

The counseling setting that has been selected for this case is a private practice. There are different types of counseling settings and each setting is influenced by the environment and the intended goals. In a private setting, there is diversity, and practitioners have the freedom to focus on different clients. This might be the opposite when it comes to other settings such as educational or legal system settings (Lazuras & Dokou, 2016). In an educational setting, the focus on the counselor is solely on people within the system. When it comes to the legal system set, the case is the same because the counselors are primarily trained to deal with people from the legal system.

ii. Types of Services Provided

The types of services that are provided to a client are determined by the problem that the client is going through. In the case of the client who is focused on in this assessment, there are three different types of services that are suitable to him. The first service is mental health. The client is going through emotional breakdowns, lows, and ups and that is a sign of mental health issues. The second type of service that will be provided to the client is educational counseling (Lazuras & Dokou, 2016). Education counseling is a field that focuses on matters that pertain to academics. The service is only limited to students. However, it is not discriminative when it comes to the ages of the clients that it serves.

The third service that will be provided is substance disorder. Substance disorder is a condition that is promoted by the addiction of a person to a certain illegal substance. There is a close relationship between substance disorder and education and mental health. The use of an illicit substance can cause educational problems for the user. Also, the use of illegal substances is one of the contributing factors to mental illnesses (Lazuras & Dokou, 2016). The services that a counselor offers to clients are dictated by the needs of the client. It is paramount to realize that the goal of each counselor should be to change the world for the better. Diversity is fundamental in the field of counseling because of the diverse people who seek help from counselors.

When counselors do not have the skills that should enable them to meet the diverse needs of clients, they affect the field of counseling negatively. The reason behind this is that people with diverse needs are limited to benefit from the counselors who are in place. In the given case, the client is dealing with three different issues (Russell-Chapin, 2016). In counseling, each issue should be addressed with the intervention that has the highest possibility of effectiveness. It is for this reason that the client will be provided with the three above-listed services.

iii. Demographic Characteristics Of The Clientele

The client has presented three different problems and that means that he is a representative of a broad group of clients in counseling. When it comes to the first issue that pertains to educational counseling, the demographics represented comprises of people of both genders but the age that is most targeted is from eight to twenty years. The reason why this is the demographic that is targeted is that the age group comprises of people who are in the education sector. People who need educational assistance and help out students.

The second issue that the client has presented is substance disorder. Substance disorder is a condition that is promoted by the abuse of illicit drugs. In this case, the characteristics of people who consume illicit drugs are put into consideration. Most of the people who are severely affected by drug abuse are between the ages of twelve and forty years (Russell-Chapin, 2016). When it comes to sexes that are affected by the consumption of illegal drugs, both men and women are affected. However, most cases involve men and that means that men are leading in drug abuse and disorders (Russell-Chapin, 2016).

b. Testing and assessments

i. Types of Testing

Norm-referenced testing will be the type of setting that will be used. The testing is important to make sure that a client is ranked based on his or her progress. It is essential to note that there is a dire need to make sure that a counselor monitors the changes and developments that are taking place between him and the client (Russell-Chapin, 2016). Having a norm-referenced testing approach in place will help to rate the client. The score will help the counselor to identify areas of strength (Russell-Chapin, 2016). The approach that a counselor takes when testing clients is dictated by different factors and one of the factors is the expectation of the client. The counselor is in place to assist the client. It, therefore, becomes important for the counselor to consider the needs of the client.

ii. Types of Assessment

1. Pediatric Symptom Checklist-17

Pediatric Symptom Checklist-17 is the first assessment that will be used in this case. The assessment is used to test the psychosocial symptoms of a child. The client who is focused on in this case is 17 years old and that means that he falls into the category of the people who should benefit from the assessment. One of the problems that the patient is suffering from is a mental disorder and the use of the assessment will help to identify and categorize the disorder. The identification and categorization of mental disorders are important (Russell-Chapin, 2016). The reason for stating so is that the best way to attend to a patient is by knowing the patient is going through. People who are facing drug abuse issues find it hard to control their emotions and tempers. In some cases, living with others in peace and harmony can be a challenge (Russell-Chapin, 2016). Therefore, the assessment comes in handy to help in testing psychosocial issues that the client should be going through.

2. Disruptive Behavior Rating Scale

Mental disorders have an impact on the focus and concentration of the patient. In some cases, attention is disrupted by things that are less important or even not important at all. The scale has forty-five questions that are present to the client or patient. The answers to the questions are used to dictate the condition of the patient. People with mental challenges might suffer from attention deficit or hyperactivity (Johnson & Brookover, 2020). Disruptive Behavior Rating Scale is an assessment tool that is used to identify the behaviors that might be affecting the concentration and commitment of the client. It is paramount to note that different mental conditions have different signs and symptoms. When signs and symptoms of a patient are indicated, it becomes easier to analyze and treat the problem of the patient.

c. Client's academic/educational and the assessment process, as well as how these assessments will be used for diagnostic and treatment intervention purposes.

i. How the Educational Development will inform the selection of the two assessments

Education is important in the field of counseling because of the interventions that are employed. In some cases, the interventions that are employed are complex and that gives clients a hard time processing. The education of the client will be important in dictating the type of assessment tool that will be used (Johnson & Brookover, 2020). The healthcare sector has changed in the last ten years and this has seen the scrapping of some of the traditional practices. A patient is considered as part and parcel of the health care sector (Russell-Chapin, 2016). Patients; being the major stakeholders in the field of healthcare are prioritized more than ever before. Patient-Centered Practice is the new norm in the healthcare sector (Russell-Chapin, 2016). Considering the fact that mental health is a discipline in health, the application of patient-centered practice is unavoidable (Russell-Chapin, 2016).

The assessment process is important because it helps to collect information from the client. In any counseling session, the involvement of both the client and the counselor is paramount. Communication is paramount. The education of a person can affect his or her communication skills. For example, communicating with a child who is five years cannot be the same way as communicating with an adolescent who is twelve years. It, therefore, means that the assessment processes must conform to the education standard of the client.

Assessment processes are different because clients have different needs. Some of the assessment processes are easy to comprehend while some are simple and straight forward. In the case of the clients who are not advanced when it comes to their education, it is advisable to use the assessment processes that are suitable (Johnson & Brookover, 2020). The assessment processes are important and it is advisable for the client to fully understand what is happening in the whole process (Field, 2017). Considering the fact that patient-centered care practice promotes the rights and freedom of customers, it is important to use assessments that clients can understand. Using processes that clients can understand helps clients to make decisions that are well aligned to their needs and cultures.

ii. The utilization of the assessments

The assessments will be used for diagnostic and treatment interventions. The assessments are employed to help identify the problem that the client is going through. The assessment helps to know the signs and symptoms that are depicted by a client (Johnson & Brookover, 2020). The signs and symptoms are matched against signs and symptoms of the possible condition. When the signs depicted by the patient appear on the list of signs of one of the mental conditions, it is proof that there are high possibilities that the client is suffering from the matched condition. The assessments are important because, without assessments, it is a challenge to identify an intervention for the condition. Assessments help to know the signs and symptoms that a patient depicts (Johnson & Brookover, 2020). After knowing the signs and symptoms, the practitioner is able to know the condition that the patient is going through. One can only treat a condition if he or she knows what it is. The absence of assessments would mean that there would be no diagnosis. It is therefore apparent that the assessment will be used to make the whole process a success.

d. How I will effectively prepare for and conduct the assessment meeting

I will make sure that everything is in place before the meeting. The first preparation focuses on the assessments that are at my disposal. It is important to be equipped with several assessments to make sure that one can choose from the options that will be provided. After having the list of assessments that are essential in the field of counseling, I will identify the setting. The setting is important because it will dictate if the sessions will flow smoothly or there will be challenges.

Communication is important and this is why I will communicate with the client. The main reason for communicating is to set the time and date of the meeting. The client is a minor and that means that I will have to consult with the parents. I will be communicating so that the parents can confirm the time and date for the appointment. In counseling, it is important to work with a plan. Also, it is important to give the client the power to make choices (Field, 2017). Therefore, I will give the family of the client the freedom to state the time that they will be available. I will then fix the date within the schedule.

The setting of the assessment meeting will be an interview that will take the face-to-face approach. I will make sure to present every piece of material that is important for the process. Before the meeting, I will collect the data from the client. The main aim is to have the information about the client that will help me understand the client. Understanding the needs of the client is paramount because it is the only way of making sure that the client benefits from the session.

e. What procedures that I will use for assessing risk to self or others

Two procedures will be used to assess the risk to self or others. The first strategy will be interrogation (Field, 2017). In this case, the counselor spends time with the client and asks the client about his life and what he goes through. After the client gets comfortable and gets familiar with the process, the counselor will start asking deeper questions. In this case, I will ask the client if he has ever thought of harming others. Also, I will ask the client if he had ever had thoughts of taking his life. The answers will be important because they will help to know if the client is a danger to himself or others. The second strategy that I will use is observation. In this case, I will create a free environment where the client will feel free to share any information. I will sit back and hear the plans and intentions of the client.

f. Statistical methods

The statistical method that will be utilized in this case will be a correlation. The assessment methods that will be used will help to collect data that will be compared to the characteristics of the possible mental conditions the client might be suffering from or exposed to. In this case, there will be a comparison of data and that is where the method of correlation comes in.

g. Ethical and culturally relevant strategies

Ethical considerations are paramount in the field of psychology. Ethics should guide every process to promote fairness and equality. The first ethical strategy will be discretion (Russell-Chapin, 2016). Counselors have a duty to promote privacy. It is the role of the counselor to make sure that private information is not exposed to people who are not associated with the process. In line with the interpretation of data, ethics will be considered. Results will only be based on the data that will be presented. I will not include information that is not associated with the process. Also, when offering treatment, I will focus on all areas that the patient is facing challenges. In line with the culture of the client, I will make sure that all interventions and processes are aligned with the culture of the client.

h. Administer one of the two assessments

The assessment that was administered in this case was Pediatric Symptom Checklist-17. The assessment is easy to administer and that is why it was selected given the fact that the client was an adolescent. The first stage of administration is the presentation of the questionnaire. In this case, the friend was supposed to answer questions on the questionnaire. After answering the questions, the friend was supposed to return the questionnaire. The answers that the friend presented would later be compared with the results slip of the questionnaire to know the possible condition the client might have been suffering from.
