This assignment asks you to choose a quote from the list below and write an analysis that responds to the quote as it applies to our current situation. Does the quote apply to any kind of social/cultural/biological turmoil today? If so, how do you know? Does the quote fail to be relevant to our condition today? If so, how?

Things to Consider:
The task of writing 1000 words on one single quote may seem daunting; however, if we keep in mind each quote embodies a whole set of assumptions, philosophies, and interests, then we can see that really what we are discussing are large-scale ideas encapsulated in these quotes. For example, the quote above from Albert Einstein suggests that repetition and insanity are interrelated. Do you agree? Can you see any problems with such a relation? Here are some problems that I see with this: doesn’t Einstein’s definition of insanity fail to consider time. That is, true repetition is impossible precisely because the world has advanced in time at the point of the repeated act. Could we not suggest, then, that this quote is simply a way for people to justify (perhaps unduly) a change in their behavior? Could we not see this as a means to justify not trying things a second time? In this case, I believe that we could apply these criticisms of the quote to our current social/cultural/biological situation. That is, I believe one way looking at the problems we face in the world today is to link those problems to our notion of change as inherently better than repetition.
In any case, your paper would have no problems making the word count requirement if you were to carefully and logically unpack the assumptions underlying the quote that you choose, and then apply these assumptions to various problems within America today: from the responses to Covid-19 (social, economic, governmental) or the recent increase in racial injustice/tension, to the personal problems (loneliness, boredom, fear, lethargy) that come with self-isolation. Really, what this assignment asks of you is to apply general ideas to any number of specific problems. And, as such, the words on the page are only limited by your ability to generate and justify your points.
Any use of first or second person will reduce your grade by one point per infraction. Avoid “to be” verbs and vague language. Do not use any research in this paper: the point is to get you thinking. I want to see your ideas, not the ideas of statisticians, bureaucrats, academics, or celebrities. I will take off points if you use outside research.
