It will cover all the readings, lecture outlines, handouts etc covered on lesson 1 - 5 and 10. The first exam has two parts. Part One (100 points) incorporates 50 multiple-choice questions, short answers, fill in the blank and matching questions. Part Two (46 points) requires writing an essay. Please keep in mind this is an open book/take home essay.   STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO STUDY CAREFULLY THE WEEKLY QUIZZES. Also, following there is a pool of essay topics. YOU SHOULD CHOOSE ONLY ONE TOPIC, in order to write your essay. The list of topic will be given to you a week in advance before the Exam in order to study for it. Students are encouraged to write the essay in WORD and after finishing it, use the ATTACHMENT FEATURE at the specific essay/box of your First Exam Folder. Do not use bold or color, keep the text of your essay as simple as you can. If you want to retain the formatting, it is better to use HTML. Instructions about how to write your essay:   1) Before you start working with your essay, make sure to type the topic of your essay as shown in the list of topics and your full name. 2) The essay should be not less than three pages long. (Not double space). Use FONT TIMES NEW ROMAN, SIZE 12, Line Spacing 1.15 and justify the formatting. 3) English misspellings are unacceptable, and will affect your scores. 4) In preparing the essay, comment all the questions of your selected topic. You must include material from the lectures, the textbook and the handouts. Students are encouraged (but not required) to incorporate new material by using internet sources.   Attention: If you do so, make sure to list the internet sources at the end of our essay (last page). Greek Civilization: The main centers of early civilization, development of important polis such as Athens and Sparta; Colonization, Persian & Peloponnesian Wars; Achievements of Greek Golden Age in philosophy, science, literature, history, etc, ancient Greek philosophers, and writers. Roman Civilization: Underline the political institution of Roman Republic, characteristics of Roman society such as family, clientage, class distinction, struggle of the orders, and imperium. Explain the Roman military strategy and diplomacy as well as the economic developments, Roman constitutional monarchy, Triumvirate, Tetrarchy, Augustan Principate, Punic Wars and Arianism.
