Summary and reflection

Everyone has his own childhood, and everyone's childhood is different, and what was your childhood like? "The Highest Tide" is the first novel by American writer Jim Lynch, which was sold in the United States in 2005. At that time, although the economic strength of the United States was in the forefront of the world, the environment became worse and worse and caused marine pollution. This caused many marine organisms to mutate or even die.. The hero of the novel is Miles, a 13 year old boy whose height is 165cm. He has a crush on the girl next door, Angie sleep in and can’t fall in sleeping every day. In addition, Miles often hears strange sounds in the sea and is very fascinated by the ocean. And he thinks that ocean knowledge could make his lover happy. In the summer of 13 years old, Miles found a giant squid at the seaside, which caught the attention of the media, and became famous. But Miles did not feel happy. It was not the life he wanted. Angie became mature and took drugs; his relationship with his parents is not good; his best friend dies of illness, all things make Miners grow up after these things.

According to Lynch, “Once professor Kramer’s home answering machine clicked on, I couldn’t control my voice, and my mother shuffled out in a long MARINERS shirt, a finger on her lips, as if the most important thing at that moment was not waking my father. I fended her off with one hand and ignored her teeth clenched cussing after she spotted the growing puddle beneath me on the kitchen floor. She stormed into the laundry room just as I finished my frantic message and the professor himself picked up for real. I told him the same stuff, only louder, then heard myself yell, ‘It’s a giant squid!’ Not I think it is a giant squid, or It might be a giant. I stated it as fact in the cool dawn and my mother suspended her furious mopping to squint at me through puffy, nearsighted eyes if her son were speaking in tongues.”( page 9) These part show the two different style reaction, one is Miles’, another one is Mines’ mother. Through the information about the quote, we can know how excited Miles is and Miles’ mother’s indifferent attitude. We can know that in his mother's eyes, the children's excitement and ideas are always stupid, the parents can’t believe a child can find some different or important thing. In addition, this also reflects the fact that American social parents were not able to communicate well with their children at that time. In my opinion, Miles' response is what every child should have at that age.,that is sharing. And I don't like Miles' mother's behavior. She doesn't care particularly about her children. She doesn't believe in Miles and she thinks that all the abnormal behavior of the child is an immature expression of this age. At this age of child, parents are very much needed to communicate. Some parents need to put down their sometimes impatience to listen to their children's heart, which is the best way for both sides.

Secondly, according to Lynch, “Do you fell like maybe something supernatural is going on with you, Miles? I gave that some thought, ‘I feel like I always feel’. ‘So then where is all this headed?’ ‘what’’ Well, where do you come up with comments like the one about God being in nothing or everything?’ ‘I was answering a question.’ ‘Why are you telling a bunch pf strangers some crazy prediction about the tide coming up too high in September? ‘ It just came out that way’ ‘But, I mean, what is your goal? Are you trying to scare people or change people-or change society?’(page 185) Miles has become famous for predicting that the tide would come up too high in September that year Various people ranging from journalists, environmentalists and non-governmental organizations such as the Sierra Club are after his attention At some point, he tries so hard to avoid the attention as much as possible. I think I find fame a dangerous thing for people who are not mentally prepared for it. It appears as if Miles is not yet ready for the fame. I agree with Florence that fame changes people. I strongly agree with this idea, many people hope to become famous one day, they work hard for their dreams. But, after success, it is almost impossible to stick to his own first heart. Fame and interest would change a person. Only a person with a strong spirit can remember his/her first heart.

Truth is in the hands of a handful of hot men. This is another conclusion that I have finished reading this article. According to Lynch, “Do you believe some higher force is guiding you? He asked. ‘No’ ‘ What about visions? Do you have vision?’ I shrugged ‘ Do you talk to God? he pressed.”(pages 189) People think that Miles has a predictive function, and in fact, Miles knowledge is devoted to the learning of marine knowledge in love with the ocean.People don’t believe some that little people believe in. They take all imagination to do the power of God. In our life, this kind of thing often happens, some people follow most thought, they dare not say or dare to think, their hearts have been distorted by this society. Only the people like Miles is so simple and original that they can speak their mind boldly. Now, too, we need constant innovation. We need new ideas that can make progress. We have to dare to ask questions and prove it, rather than not have confidence to hide in the heart, so that your ideas will never be known and you don't know it's right or wrong.

According to Lynch, “Phelps glared up at me from our clam ditch through those fuck you bangs. ‘You’re freak,’ he said. ‘Why don’t you use all your homo-reading to study something of value to us?’ ‘Like what?’ ‘ The G-spot, Squid Boy.’ Phelps popped out a Kent, clutched it between the least dirty of his fingers and lit it. ‘ It’s the button inside women that drives them wild.’ He mumbled around his cigarette like a gangster. ‘ Once we find out where it’s at, we’re in.’ I was baffled. I’d never heard about any secret control panel inside women. ‘ Let’s see your fingers,’ Phelps said. I reluctantly stuck out my hand. He frowned. ‘ I think they’re too short’ ‘For what?’ ‘To reach the button.’(page 30) In Miles' view, Phelps is a boy who has slender hands, likes playing the "air guitar", loves smoking, lazy and focuses on sex topics. At that time, Mile for Phelps, Miles was a boring boy who only liked the sea. For example, when Miles talks about the relationship between ocean tides and knowledge, Phelps is talking about women "G-spot".At that time, the United States was an economic power in the world. Because of the orderly development of the economy, many children become precocious, and they no longer have normal children's thinking. I think that in a child's childhood, we should have the same ideas as Miles, instead of discussing the topic of sex.

Finally, after reading this book, I was most surprised by the thirteen year old boy's mastery of ocean knowledge. He spent a lot of time listening and seeing, much more than others, and never stopped. I think the author wants to tell people through this novel that sometimes we should lay down the footsteps to observe the things around us, not to follow the pace of the society and miss the fine and beautiful things around us.
