History
Originally, the term referred to a fire-retardant wall in a building that served as a barrier to fires. With the increasing use of computers in the 1980s and 90s, the meaning of the term shifted to its contemporary definition.

A firewall protects devices or LANs by controlling packets traveling over the LAN or connections between devices on the LAN and devices on the WAN
