Fin Experiment and Analysis-Write up is Due on March 16, 2021
Week of March 2, 2021
The experimental set-up for the fin experiment consists of a propane torch or a hot plate as shown below with a thermostatic control, an infrared temperature sensor/reader and thermocouples.
Procedure
CAUTION: THE SAMPLES WILL GET HOT AND ONLY THOSE STUDENTS THAT HAVE INSULATED MITTENS CAN REMOVE THE SAMPLE FROM THE HOT PLATE
Each group of 3 students will measure all the dimensions of their test sample before placing it on the hot plate. One member of the group will be provided with a mitten to handle the sample. The hot plate temperature will be controlled by the instructor or the TA.
2. The group will start taking temperature measurements with the infrared sensor and/or thermocouples placed at premeasured distances along the fin. The ambient temperature should also be recorded.
The group should monitor the sample for a sufficient time to reach steady state and a minimum of 4 locations.
3. Using an analytical procedure (see the attached fin problem-we will go over in class), the fin temperature distribution will be analyzed based on conditions recorded.
4. The experimental data and the results of the analysis will be compared graphically, and with a spreadsheet (Xcel or Matlab) assessment tool and discussed.
