Fine-Motor Skills – “It’s All in The Hands”

· It is Important to Put Our Small Muscles to Work!!

There are plenty skills needed for children to complete everyday fine motor skills such as writing, tying shoes, or catching a ball. Small muscles are important. Without having gained strength in fine motor skills, a child can suffer moving forward. They may not have the ability to do these small tasks, but they also may lack the confidence to do more advanced tasks or projects because of this inability.

· Parents We Need You!!!

During these times of Covid-19 we are asking that our parents reinforce by continuing to work with your child or children at home with their small muscles of fine motor skills.

We have had a gap in the learning process, and we are concerned that our children are missing out on practicing majority of the aspects in the learning process of their fine motor skills. We now consider the importance of having home-based learning, and close monitoring of these aspects.

· The Importance of Building Fine-Motor Skills

There are plenty of easy ways to strengthen these muscles, practice co-ordination and develop hand/eye co-ordination using simple, everyday materials and a bit of creative fun!

What skills do ‘fine motor skills’ include?

· Academics skills:

· Pencil skills (scribbling, coloring, drawing, writing)

· Scissors skills (cutting)

· Play skills:

· Construction skills using Lego, puzzles, beads, train tracks

· Doll dressing and manipulation

· Technology use - mouse and stylus manipulation

· Self-care skills:

· Dressing – tying shoelaces, doling up sandals, zips, buttons, belts

· Eating – using cutlery, opening lunch boxes and food bags

· Hygiene – cleaning teeth, brushing hair, toileting.

· At-Home Fine Motor skills to Try at Home

Here below are activities the parents can work at home with his or her child to increase their fine motor ability.

· Let children exercise writing their alphabets or his or her name.

· Molding objects with clay help exercise hands and fingers.

· String objects or using Tongs helps children develop hand/eye coordination.

· Painting gives the children to openly express themselves through fine motor skills. They may choose to paint with brushes, fingers, or hands.

· Cutting Paper or Using Scissors is another skills children to progress fine motor skills. Parents can create dotted-line worksheets for children to use hand/eye coordination to practice cutting on a straight line or cutting out shapes.
