Finding Companies by Industry
Business Source Complete To find lists of publicly traded companies that operate in the commercial printing industry (NAICS code 323111), use the library’s Business Source Complete database. This database has articles and reports on business topics. The Company Information search feature in this database will allow you to generate lists of companies using criteria such as company type and NAICS code. Note: only publicly traded companies have to make their financial information available to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission so you will want to make sure you search for public companies for the Unit 2 IP assignment.
Click Find articles and ebooks on the library’s homepage.
A new page will load. An alphabetical listing of the library's databases will appear.
Look for Business Source Complete in this list. Click on the name to open the database.
The search page will open. In the menu above the search boxes, click on Company Information to
search for companies by NAICS code and other criteria.

The company information search page will load.
Scroll down past the search box until you see the limiters available under the Search Options
heading.

Under U.S. Company Type, click in the box next to Public and a checkmark will appear when this
option has been selected.
In the NAICS Code/Description box, enter 323111 which is the NAICS code for commercial
printing.
After making your selections, scroll back up to the top of the screen and click the Search button.
A list of companies that match your search criteria will load. The companies with the highest
revenue will be listed first.
Make note of the ticker symbol that appears in parentheses to the right of a company’s name. You
can use a company’s ticker symbol on the stock market to more easily look up financial information

about the company on the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s website (instructions are
included in the Finding Company Financial Information section of this guide).
For example, the ticker symbol for R.R. Donnelley & Sons Company is: RRD
Some companies in the list, such as FedEx, operate in multiple industries. To view a description of
the company’s business, click on its name in the list.
The company information page for the company you selected will open.
Under Line of Business you will find information about the company’s primary products and
services.
Scroll down the page and click on the Industry heading to display a list of the NAICS codes
assigned to that company.

Finding Company Financial Information
SEC EDGAR Website Public companies in the United States are required by law to report financial information to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). These reports are made available to the public on the SEC’s website, in their Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval system (EDGAR). Of these reports, the annual report, known often by its form name of 10-K, is one of the most useful to locate key financial information. Financial statements are included in the section of the report titled Item 8. The SEC has a guide to reading annual reports (10-K) here: https://www.sec.gov/answers/reada10k.htm
Follow the steps below to learn how to find annual reports (10-K) for publicly traded companies in the U.S.
Before visiting the SEC EDGAR website, try to find the stock symbol, aka ticker symbol, for the
company you want to research. It will be easier to search for SEC filings if you know the company’s
ticker symbol on the stock market. You can find a company’s ticker symbol by following the
company information search instructions outlined on pages 1-4 of this guide.
You can also look up the ticker symbol for any company on any stock exchange on the MarketWatch
website:

Enter the company name into the search box and click Search to view your results.
In the list of results, look for the ticker symbol for the company you are researching.
Next, visit the SEC EDGAR website: https://www.sec.gov/edgar/searchedgar/companysearch.html
Enter the company’s ticker symbol in the Fast Search box and click Search to view your results.
A list of SEC filings should appear. The newest reports available will be listed first.
The filing date of each report will be listed in a column on the right side of the screen. The form name
aka filing type will be listed in the Filings column on the left side of the screen.
To filter your results so you only see annual reports, enter the form name 10-K in the Filing Type box
at the top of the list and click the Search button.
Only annual reports will be listed. The newest reports available will be listed first.

To open a report, click the Documents button next to the form name.
Click the link next to the form name to open the report. This should be the first link listed in the
Document column.
The report will open and you can scroll through it to look for the financial information you need to
find.

Use the table of contents near the beginning of the report to jump to the financial statements section
(Item 8).
