Assignment: 20 points

For your final assignment, you will write a 4-page reflection on your positions on the Commute of Power and Oppression and identify ways you can leverage your privilege, speak back to power where you are oppressed, and what to do with your middle ground positions.

First, explain intersectionality and its relationship to the Commute of Power and Oppression for about a paragraph. Then, explain how you went about identifying your position on every one of the trains, paying close attention to which were easy to identify and which were not so easy to identify and why. Write about how you felt about the exercise and what you learned and which trains tracks surprised you the most. That should take up the rest of page 1.

Next, identify the train tracks where you hold a position towards the top and explain (by relying on course materials or additional research) what that means about the power and privilege in your life. Write about whether you were aware of this privilege and how you’ve leveraged it prior to this exercise or about your lack of awareness and how you plan to use your power and privilege for good moving forward. That should take up page 2.

Finally, identify the train tracks where you hold a position towards the bottom as well as your middle ground positions, if any. Explain how the exercise reflects your lived experience with discrimination and oppression and explain (by relying on course materials or additional research) how you can use your lived experience to combat and resist inequality. As for your middle ground positions, reflect about what that means in terms of which way you want to think about your position. How do you want to help those located beneath you and how you want to confront the people above you. Add any final reflections. That should take up pages 3-4.
