Effects of Internet Social Networking on Youth
Internet social networking has been an emerging concern in the modern world. The realm of internet social networking sited is increasingly becoming the subject of research on social sciences field. Scholars in different fields have started investigating various social networking sites’ aspects. Also, numerous studies have been carried out across the world towards investigating how social network sites affect problems of privacy, youth culture, identity, education as well as interpersonal relationships. In this paper, an effort has been made to review different studies related to the research theme. The literature review allows people to study the main perceptions of studies conducted in a similar field.
The usage of Internet Social Networking among youths has increased rapidly across the world. Ahn (2011) internet social networking has become a substantial part of youths’ live. Compared with other groups, the usage of social networking is more among students. The study by Müller et al. (2016) clearly clarified that usage of social networking sites takes most of the students’ time and they redirect their time on non-constructive as well as improper activities. In most cases, students use social media sites for happiness purpose, but it has been found that internet social networking use for assignments such as online classes has a positive impact on students. Nevertheless, the use of internet social networking mainly social media for informal communication seem to be futile as well as time wastage.
Another study Chng et al. (2015), examined as well as investigating the impact of social networking sites on youths. For this purpose, a questionnaire was selected as a survey method. The study intended to analyse the effects of using social networking sites on youths. The study shows that a large number of youths use social networking sites due to peer pressure and also due to the fact their friend uses it.
Moreover, Kuss & Griffiths (2011) the author analysed the use of social networking sites in education. The study discussed the relation between youth’s involvement in social media as well as their learning. The author also discussed how social media affect peer collaborations and creation of information. Also, the notion that youths know how to use social media may act as a barrier for the youths who might require closer direction as well as supervision. Also, the study showed that since female students use social media more than male students, gender may have a great effect to the extent at which youths are occupied with learning efforts through social networking sites, which influence their general learning process.
The study by Sampasa-Kanyinga & Lewis (2015) aimed at exploring the impact of social networking sites in students’ academic life. The author found that use of social networking sites has some positive impacts on youths’ life. These social media sites offer youths a platform where they are able to create their social life and make friends. Social media sites are the most convenient ways for youths to share their thoughts and also opinions. Also, by using social networking sites, students are able to join different groups and discuss topics without conveyance problems. Also, the author noted that social networking sites help youths to improve their social skills and also gain confidence.
Nevertheless, Müller et al. (2016) that social media sites have negative impacts on youths as they get much involved in such sites’ activities hence becoming social networking sites’ addicts. Such addiction behavior negatively affects students in classrooms activities due to concentration concerns.
