EXECUTIVE SUMMERY

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has asked ASU Transportation Group (ASUTG) to construct plans for two possible alternative routes south of Atwood based on provided data. This data includes a contour map of the area bypassing Atwood at grade, along with major geotechnical information, traffic data, and the station at which the project should begin. For the completion of the project, the group selected the alternative routes, construct the mass haul diagram, calculate the total earthworks and computed the overhaul cost. In addition, the horizontal alignment and vertical cross section and structural design as well as pavement works has been done by following the provided guidelines.

INTRODUCTION

The State of Tennessee (TDOT) is in the process of completing the design of the proposed SR 76 (U.S. 79) in Carroll County, Tennessee. The final design will consist of a four-lane highway connecting the towns of Milan, TN to McKenzie, TN. This highway will bypass the towns of Atwood, TN and Trezvant, TN.

A.S.U. Transportation Group (ASUTG) was tasked with determining the best route that would have the least impact on the social and economical aspects of the surrounding communities. Along with the route selection, the group has provided horizontal and cross-section data at 100 ft intervals along the selected route. Mass haul and structural designs for the route were analyzed and those findings can be found in the report.

Problem Statement

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has asked ASU Transportation Group (ASUTG) to construct plans for two possible alternative routes using the data which includes a contour map of the area bypassing Atwood at grade, along with major geotechnical information, traffic data, and the station at which the project should begin. Considerations for the existing infrastructure, landscapes, and the socioeconomic impacts of this project will be addressed in the final report. The final project will be a four/five lane highway that will connect Milan, TN and McKenzie, TN. ASUTG is to consider right of way limits along with potential issues for both routes. This report will detail: the horizontal alignments and cross sections at 100 feet intervals, location and elements of all horizontal and vertical curves along the route, mass haul diagram, and overhaul cost, structural design of the roadway, estimation of layer coefficients and drainage coefficients, and comparison with AASHTO minimum layer thicknesses. The proposed routes must maintain good quality and an effective level of service for twenty years.

Figure 1 shows the location of the new roadway, which also shows the locations of the towns of Milan, Atwood, Trezvant, and McKenzie [1].

Significance

The State of Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is in the process of completing the design of the proposed SR 76 (U.S. 79) in Carroll County. The proposed project begins, west of Cades-Atwood Road (Sta. 99+92 [+/-]) to East of S.R. 77 (Sta. 310+40 [+/-]). This project will tie Milan, TN to Mckenzie, TN by means of a four or five lane highway. There are two small towns such as Atwood and Trezvant between Milan and Mckenzie along S.R.76. This project along with the future ones will be a bypass around these towns, as shown in Figure 1. The proposed new facility have some impacts on the adjacent and surrounding areas. The impacts of the aforementioned project on the social and economic conditions of the surrounding communities are significant. Considering these impacts, different infrastructural developments will be constructed along the highway. The surrounding community will be economically developed such as job access, income increment, and better quality of life for this kind of highway project.

Objectives

The objectives of this project are given as follows:

· Design a four/five lane highway connecting Milan, TN to McKenzie, TN. Using information provided by the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) two alternative routes will be designed.

· The design will include horizontal and vertical alignments, profiles of existing and finished grades, the locations of and elements of all stations, mass haul diagram, and structural design.

· The group will follow all guidelines set forth by AASHTO, state, and local codes for designing the routes.

METHODOLOGY AND TASKS

Task 1: Project Proposal

A proposal consisting of the significance of the project along with the objectives of the project was written. A list of the tasks the group completed during the design process and the estimated timeline for the completion of these tasks had been included in the project proposal.

Task 2: Determine Alternative Routes

The design team selected two east to west directional alternative routes that fall within the specified right of way. The level of service for each route should be LOS-A. The design team calculated the amount of right of way needed to maintain road way features consistent with LOS-A. The width of these lanes were considered in calculating the amount of right of way required. The right of way included four shoulders, one median, two side slopes, an additional two feet of clearance for ease of excavation and fill, and the width of both drainage ditches.

Task 3: Horizontal Alignments and Cross Sections

For the horizontal alignment and cross sections, TDOT has requested all information regarding curves and cross sections at 100-foot intervals. Curve data included the locations and elements of all vertical and horizontal curves along the entire route. The horizontal alignments included plan and profile views of the entire selected route with elevation views being included every 100 feet along the route. The elevation view included the entire width of the roadway, shoulders, slopes, and other additional earthwork.

Task 4: Mass Haul Diagram

A Mass Haul Diagram was constructed for the selected route. The overhaul cost of the route was computed with a free haul distance of 500 feet and an overhaul price of $15/yd3. The ordinates at each section were calculated from the vertical and horizontal profiles. The end area at each station was used to calculate the estimated earthwork volume.

Task 5: Structural Design

The structural design of the roadway was determined using information provided by TDOT about the traffic expected on the road. The design provided by ASU Transportation Group included the traffic lanes and shoulders of the roadway. All structural designs were compared with AASHTO minimum requirements to confirm that minimum layer thickness has been achieved along the entire roadway.

Task 6: Progress Report

Each team member wrote a report over the progress the group has made in the design process. These reports included the plans for future design work. The progress reports were submitted to Dr. Hossain on March 26, 2019.

Task 7: Oral Presentation

The design team gave an oral presentation detailing the final design of the proposed roadway. The presentation was given on March 26, 2019 to the students enrolled in Transportation Engineering II and to Dr. Hossain.

Task 8: Written Report

The group will compose a written report consisting of the steps taken to arrive at the final design. The report will include an executive summery and it will detail the whole design process. The assumptions made and calculations used to arrive at the final design will also be included in the final report. The final report will be submitted to Dr. Hossain on April 18, 2019.

The overall methodology is shown below in a flow diagram. Figure 2 represents the step by step procedure of the design project.

RESULT AND DISCUSSION ()

Determination of Alternative Routes )

Two routes were considered for the proposed highway. In Figure 3. both routes are shown. Route 1 was not chosen as it intersected a major business in the area and intersected an existing pond. To minimize the socioeconomic impact and avoid additional mass haul costs, route 2 was chosen for the projected highway. Route 2 did intersect a home and small business, but the mass haul was significantly lower.

The design speed for the proposed highway was 60 mph. No superelevation was used in the design. Details for all five curves can be found in Table 1.

A Mass Haul Diagram was constructed for the selected route. The ordinates at each section were calculated from the vertical and horizontal profiles. Figure 4 represents the mass haul diagram of our selected route.

The overhaul cost of the route was computed with a free haul distance of 500 feet and an overhaul price of $15/yd3. The overhaul cost for the selected route is given below-

The Volume of earthwork is 133073.11 Yd3

Overhaul Stations are (6.34+10.925) = 17.265 Stations

So, the total cost of earthwork = $15*17.265*133073.11 = $ 34,462,608.7
