Final Proposal Guidelines

Psychology/Sociology10: Research Methods and Design

The final proposal must include the following sections. Five parts with headings to make it clear you are transitioning into each new part. Total possible points: 150.

1) Introductory Statement of Research: What is your research topic, e.g., social phenomenon you have been evaluating throughout the quarter? Why is it important? State your research question, and the type of research you would be conducting, e.g., exploratory? Why is this type of research best to help you answer your question? How will this research contribute to existing knowledge of the topic? Examples should be used from the textbook for this section. Examples should be cited. Citations are formatted per ASA guidelines. (25 pts)

2) Literature Review: What is the current knowledge of the topic, and the gaps that your work will help fill? How does this knowledge help you address your research question and build upon current research? Does your research have a hypothesis? If so, you’ll want to state this hypothesis as you conclude this section. You should have a minimum of 5 peer-reviewed sources, e.g., academic journals you used in your annotated bibliographies. Please make sure these are five different sources, i.e., don’t use the same source five times. All sources should be cited per ASA guidelines. (25 pts)

3) Methodological Plan: How will you gather your information to answer your question? Demonstrate how your methods will get you closer to test your hypothesis(es). Which theory will you apply to guide your research? Will you choose a quantitative or qualitative approach? Mixed methods? What is your sampling method and the process of the method? Why is this method best for your research? Explain. Examples should be used from the textbook for this section. Examples should be cited. Citations are formatted per ASA guidelines. (25 pts)

4) Ethics Statement: How will human subjects be protected during the research? Detail some of the main steps you will take to ensure this. Will you need to address the IRB, for example? Why? Examples should be used from the textbook for this section. Examples should be cited. Citations are formatted per ASA guidelines. (25 pts)

5) Statement of Limitations: What are the potential weaknesses of the research design, and how will you minimize them? Finally, how might future researchers use your findings, i.e., how can they build upon your findings? Be specific. Examples should be used from the textbook for this section. Examples should be cited. Citations are formatted per ASA guidelines. (25 pts)

In addition to the above criteria. You will be graded based upon the following:

• Citing all sources (in-text citations) as well as placing a reference section at the end of the proposal. To help you with this you will need to review the ASA Style Guide. (10 pts)

• The length of the proposal should be a minimum of 5 pages, and a maximum of 6 pages (writing less and/or more will reduce your points) NOTE: Title page and bibliography (reference section) does NOT contribute to the total page count. (10 pts)

• Double-spaced, 12 pt., Times New Roman font., 1 inch margins (5 pts)
