SEXUAL HARASSMENT IN THE WORKPLACE

Introduction

For adults, work is the first major challenge in life they need to deal with. A stable job means

improving the quality of life, realizing self-worth and financial freedom. The existence of the

workplace is not only a platform for people to display their talents, but it is also full of dark sides

and disputes over interests. Sexual harassment is the most common incident in the workplace.

According to the data, “81 per cent of women have experienced sexual harassment in their

lifetime. Almost three-quarters were harassed by someone more senior in their organization

(Snook, 2021).” As a caring, warm, empathetic, and emotional character. Women are considered

by society as a relatively disadvantaged group compared with men. Especially for women with

families, taking care of their children and taking care of the food and daily life of the whole

family are also the responsibilities and obligations that women need to bear. Because from the

perspective of the inherent structure of society, men have always been traveling and subsidizing

the role of the family. So for most men, they don’t need to worry too much about trivial matters

in the family. However, according to the current economic situation and society's call for women

to be independent and self-reliant, most women have also assumed financial responsibility. So

for women who are disadvantaged groups, the probability of sexual harassment in the workplace

is greatly increased. And what's more sad is approximately 72 per cent of workplace sexual

harassment victims do not report it (Snook, 2021).

SEXUAL HARASSMENT IN THE WORKPLACE

● In Fisher & Ryan (2021)’s article, they pointed out that “compared to cis-men, women

and members of minoritized gender groups tend to earn less, save less, hold less secure

jobs, and are more likely to be employed in informal sectors. But in the face of a severe

epidemic, those women who did not lose their jobs are often employed in the healthcare

sector, working on the frontline of the pandemic. In addition, women of colour are

especially likely to be employed in healthcare positions that put them in direct physical

contact with patients. (p.239)” Not only are the disadvantages brought about by gender

differences in the workplace reflected under the epidemic, the unfairness of gender

differences has always been easily discovered. Women in the workplace need to remain

silent and endure some shameless behavior due to financial pressure. Some people may

choose to quit work immediately, but the result is a lower-paying job.

● Saguy (2020)’ s article indicates that gender is too differentiated in the current society.

People's perception is that women and men are two completely independent groups. And

it is precisely because gender is so divided that it makes it much more difficult for

women to gain a foothold in society. Because of the long-term influence of society,

people will unconsciously regard women as weak and carry out sexual harassment.
