SCI 101 Final Project

Project Formatting Guide: (this is just a suggested way to organize your project)

· Title page (with name, date, and title)

· Table of Contents at the beginning

· Paragraph 1: Attention Grabber and Statement of Issue: Purpose and importance of paper/presentation. Grab your audience’s attention with a shocking picture or quote or stat. What is your event?

· Paragraph 2: Introduce your event – what is it, where did it happen, and when? What was the basic outcome? (Hint: maps and images are good here)

· Paragraph 3: Who Cares Statistics”: Discuss some basic data and stats related to your event (use comparisons if you are making up your scenario and look at similar events for realistic numbers). How many people were impacted? What was the extent? How bad was it? Monetary costs?

· Paragraph 4: Bigger Picture Connection to Society: How many people worldwide were or are impacted by these types of events? How prolific are they in the area you studied? Are there any social and environmental justice issues surrounding your event? (such as, is there no money for relief or emergency funds for families). Feel free to introduce some points that will make your audience relate to this project better (ex. human activities, civil liberties, environmental justice, inequality).

· Paragraph 5: Physics Unit- Milestone 1: Connect your event to Milestone 1 and your physics unit. Discuss the Laws of Motion and any impact physics that would occur. Use examples from your Milestone 1.

· Paragraph 6: Chemistry Unit- Milestone 2: Connect your event to Milestone 2 and your chemistry unit. Discuss the chemistry of your event (ex. volcanos discharging gasses, pyroclastic explosions, radiation from bombs, metal dust from meteors and asteroids, etc.). Talk about the chemical properties and the Laws of Conservation of Matter and Energy.

· Paragraph 7: Earth Science Unit- Milestone 3: Connect your event to Milestone 3 and your earth science unit. Discuss the Earth’s atmosphere and how the weather and climate could be impacted by your event (ex. dust from asteroid blocks the sun and there is metal rain, radiation rain from a bomb, acid rain from a supervolcano, etc.).

· Paragraph 8: Climate Change Impacts: Discuss the connection between your event and climate change. Does it contribute to climate change or did climate change cause it?

· Paragraph 9: Future Predictions: Tell a story of what you see in the future after your event occurs (base it on research).

· Paragraph 10: Conclusion: What are YOUR take-aways from this class and this final project? How can learning about physical science help save your life?
