SOC 342: Social Inequality | Final Project

Inequality in Society: A Photographic Analysis

For this final project you will explore and illustrate how inequality is embedded in society, often manifesting in ways that are normalized or taken for granted. Through this project you will critically analyze these dynamics through a visual analysis and reflection.

Requirements:

1. Photographic Evidence (30 Points)

a. Select six photographs that respect aspects of inequality:

i. Three Original Photos: Taken by you, showcasing real-world examples you observe in your community or daily life.

ii. Three Found Photos: Found online, representing broader societal issues. Be sure to cite the source of these images.

2. Written Analysis (60 Points)

a. Write a 3–4-page paper, double-spaced, that connects your six photos to relevant course concepts, topics, and readings.

i. Introduction: Briefly introduce the concept or concepts of inequality that you will be focusing on.

ii. Photographic Analysis: For each photo, provide a description and discuss how it represents inequality. Connect the photo to at least one course concept and cite relevant readings or lectures.

iii. Conclusion: Reflect on the insights you gained through this project and the broader implications of the examples you selected.

3. Video Presentation (50 Points)

a. Create a 3–4-minute presentation using your six photos.

i. Use slides or another visual aid to showcase your photos.

ii. Explain each photo’s connection to inequality and highlight key points from your analysis.

4. Professionalism and Organization (10 Points)

a. You can organize your paper/presentation in a variety of ways (thematically, by photo, grouping photos in pairs, etc.), but you should ensure that both the written and visual components are well-organized, clear, and free from major errors.

b. Cite all sources appropriately using APA format.
