Questions Answers
What is the best way to get feedback on our final paper? Can we email sections of our paper for feedback?
You will have time to meet 1 on 1 with Katt or Alex during or after class on Monday. We are available to answer your questions over email. We are not able to make any edits over email.
What are the different research methods? HW 3: Chi Square Quantitative Method HW 4: Interview Qualitative Method HW 5: Content Analysis Qualitative Method
What is a typology? A typology is a way that you organize your data to answer a qualitative research question, especially with interview and ethnographic research. A typology involves making comparative categories for your data.
Is the research question for the final paper the meta question about macro/micro factors? Or is it a different question?
The research question for the final paper will be the research question in the methods/results section you chose (from HW3 OR HW4 OR HW5). You will need to make some minor adaptations to your literature review depending upon which method you chose. You will need to write you intro and discussion/conclusion to accompany the research question of HW 3 OR 4 OR 5.
If we use HW 5, how do we integrate that research question with the meta research question? How do we integrate it with the literature we’ve already written?
You can link HW 5 to your literature review like this: “These kinds of methods and data sources have been used...Some authors talk about these micro factors… Other authors talk about these macro factors... However, none of the studies have addressed these particular macro factors or this data source.”
Should the abstract be double spaced? Yes, no more than 1 double spaced page.
Does the abstract need to be italicized? No.
If the title is too long, is the entire title supposed to be in the page number
No, just put the main phrase from the title in the heading.
heading?
Will everyone’s literature review be the same regardless of the method they are using?
It will be mostly the same. However, you will tailor the last paragraph of your literature review to speak to the method you chose to use.
What makes an abstract different than in introduction?
The abstract is very succinct, and it includes information on your findings.
Were the discussion and conclusion already included in HW 3, 4, and 5?
No, you need to draft a new discussion and conclusion using the directions provided in the final assignment. If you are using HW 4 or 5, you can take the discussion from your HW and put it into your new discussion and conclusion section. If you are using HW 4 or 5 and you are confused about what do with your discussion/conclusion, come talk to us on Monday.
Do we have to find sources for California Demographics, or can we generalize?
Specifically reference California demographics provided by the census. You can find this with a quick google search.
If we use HW 5 do we include the chart. Yes! And with good detail in it.
Where should page numbering start? On the title page.
How can I get Alex’s comments if I don’t have microsoft word?
You are going to need to get access to a computer with Word. You may be able to gain access via UCI virtual computing lab, but I don’t know about that. I suggest you reach out to your classmates (remember you exchanged contact info). Maybe one of them can download for you and help you out?
For HW3, where do the tables go? They belong in the results section.
What is the total page length for the whole paper?
18 pages max, including title page, abstract, and works cited
For HW 5, if we have demographic information for the colleges, where do we find it, and how do we cite it?
Colleges usually have easily accessible information on their demographics online. You can just cite the main webpage for the colleges, ie for
UCI, just uci.edu
Would the section and subsection headers remain the same as they were in the homework assignments?
Yes, unless you got feedback on that from Alex.
Should we right the abstract and conclusion last?
I suggest you do your revisions in this order: 1- Your methods and results 2-Your literature review 3- Your discussion and conclusion 4-Introduction 5- Abstract 6- Title and Works cited
Do the 6 sources given to us for our literature review need to be referenced throughout the paper, or just in your literature review?
You only need to use them in your literature review. They may also be used in your introduction, and discussion and conclusion.
Since some parts of the paper will be repetitive, can we say things like, “As stated earlier,” etc?
Sure!
If we pick HW 4, do we state that the data come from the film, or do we make up information as if we did the interviews ourselves?
Make up a scenario as if you had done the interviews yourselves. Place this at the end of your methods section, just as you were instructed to do for your assignment. ““Note: All interview quotes and excerpts referenced in this article are derived from the film ‘First Generation’ (2011), by Jaye and Adam Fenderson. I did not conduct interviews. For the purpose of practicing qualitative data analysis, in this article I am treating content from the film as if I had conducted the interviews, myself.” Be sure to add a reference for the film in your works cited page.
How does the literature fit into the abstract?
In abstract, focus on the tension or gap in the literature and say how you paper responds.
How do we format the title page? Look on the course website for an example.
