SOC Final paper
SOC 100, Fall 2020 Dr. Smith
A 2 Part - Final Paper, 100 points, due on Wednesday, 11/18 by 12:00pm (noon)
This final paper has two parts. Basically, you can think of the paper as two separate short papers.
Part I - Your life and sociology (3+ pages)
For this part of the paper you will write about sociological concepts and your life. Essentially you are utilizing specific sociological concepts to interpret and understand your personal life (past and present). You should write about your childhood, your adolescent years, and your current life.
For this part of the paper, you need to use at least 3 of the following sociological concepts (be sure to demonstrate good understanding of the concepts). Make sure the concepts are in bold in the paper:
1. Culture (material and/or symbolic)
2. Values (can use specific U.S. cultural values)
3. Norms
4. Socialization (can focus on gender socialization, family socialization etc.)
5. Social Class (any location on the ladder)
6. Social Status and roles (e.g. male, female, U.S. citizen, son, daughter, friend, team member, fraternity/sorority member etc.)
7. Law/Crime/Deviance
8. Gender, gender inequality
9. Race/Ethnicity
10. Prejudice/Discrimination
11. Media
Part II - Social issue discussion and analysis (3+ pages)
For this part of the paper, choose a social issue that interests you (e.g., poverty, social class, same-sex marriage, crime, race/ethnicity, gender inequality, abortion, healthcare, drugs, child abuse, education, etc.). Your options here are wide open --- think of an issue that interests you that you want to learn about and write on.
Use at least four (4) popular press articles (newspapers, magazines) for this part of your paper. Provide a reference page for your articles (any reference style is fine, just be consistent).
Discuss why this issue is important to you (reference at least three (3) of the Values from your text, Chapter 2). Next, summarize the main points of the articles. Finally, explain the extent to which your perspective is informed by the articles, and, whether you agree/disagree with the articles’ main points.
Papers must be uploaded on BB in the assigned place by 12:00pm (noon) on Wednesday, 11/18. The paper must be in RTF, PDF, or MSWORD.
Each part of the paper should be at least 3+ pages; so, each part of the paper must have a 4th page of text. Think of it as two short papers, each 3+ pages.
This total page amount does not include a title page or the reference page.
Please be sure to not fill in space with larger than normal margins, spacing etc.
Papers must be in 12 point font, with 1 inch margins. Papers are graded based on format, grammar, and content.
Papers lose 12 points for each 24 hours late (so papers uploaded by 12:00pm – noon, on 11/19 would lose 12 points, papers uploaded by 12:00pm – noon, on 11/20 would lose 24 points, etc.).
ANY style/format is fine (e.g. APA), just be consistent please.
