Abstract

Wal-Mart is international company that has been able to establish itself successfully largely through diversification. The company has expanded to 14 different countries across the international market. Its success is mainly attributed to fact that the company values its customer and believes that the customer is the most important entity of this company. As the largest retailer in the world, the company has been able to live according to its mission statement, vision statement and its core values. Like many other institutions, Walmart strives to achieve its strategic competitiveness and stay ahead of competitors. However, both external and internal environmental aspects influence this goal. The comprehension of the conditions in the outside environment that a company establishes through analysis of its environment is paired with knowledge regarding its interior structure to form the foundation for creating the company’s visions, mission and execution of its strategic actions. In lieu of this, the fast foods firm has noted several factors in relation to long queues, stiff completion and changes in consumer behavior that influence profitability as well as trends in social responsibility that affect the business. Ethics impact largely on corporate strategy and decision-making at Wal-Mart. The need to eliminate the negative implications on employee treatment based on poor wage allocation and health issues is high for Wal-Mart. The kind of work ethics that an organization introduces largely determines work performance and output of employees. In coming up with right ethical procedures by drawing a good code of conduct, Wal-Mart will transform the negative perception that has previously been created. This includes incorporating respect, fair treatment, proper remuneration and corporate social responsibility in the corporate strategy. Effective management of any business requires proper decision-making, which determines the success of the company. Although many businesses face a great challenge in making the right decisions, some companies have experienced remarkable growth due to the good decisions they made. In the case of Walmart Chicken Bites, proper decision-making will be integral in helping the business realize its desired objectives. This includes establishment of clear mechanisms that include proper management, communication, and confirmation of decision implementation.

Introduction

It is important for company to include in their strategies elements of corporate social responsibility based on how they prepare for trends in corporate culture and social responsibility. The fast food industry has been largely dynamic in the last five decades. Initially, consumers were more focused on the delicious and timely meals provided by fast food restaurants. This trend has, however, changed, and consumers are more conscious about consuming healthy foods (Brady, Robertson & Cronin, 2001). This paper identifies with Walmart, a leading retailer in fast foods and identifies with its trends in ethics, corporate social responsibility and sustainability. Besides this it discusses the impacts of these trends on Walmart including business ethics and regulations that affect decision making. The paper looks at efforts of cultural awareness and civic engagement by Walmart, how these efforts align with mission, vision, and values of the firm. The work is concluded by focusing on the rewards accrued to Walmart for implementing corporate social responsibility.

Another focus is on decision making of the company, as well as the impacts of those decisions. In particular, it refers to business decisions that the company needs to make, and the specific processes utilized in making the decisions. The paper also looks into the impact of those decisions and processes in the business sustainability and attributes of corporate culture of the company. These decisions and processes are also bound to affect the stakeholder groups, and this paper looks at how the stakeholder groups are affected. In addition, this paper evaluates the impact of the business on the community and global environment.

An evaluation of the corporate social responsibility strategies which Walmart Chicken Bites engages in, with special attention to the efforts in the cultural awareness and the civic engagement is discussed. Moreover, the manner in which the CSR efforts are aligned with the corporate vision, mission, and values of the company is presented including the benefits which are to be accrued from the alignment of cultural awareness and civic engagement efforts with corporate values, mission, and vision in terms of profits and increased exposure in the corporate world.

Wal-Mart can be described as an international company that has been able to establish itself successfully; this is because the company has stores all over the USA. Moreover, the company has also been able to expand its branches to other 14 different countries across the international market. The success behind this company has been mainly due to the fact that the company values its customer and believes that the customer is the most important entity of this company. The idea of having the customer come first was a coined by Sam Walton who was the one behind the Wal-Mart company.

In this case, the product that will be at focus is the Walmart chicken bite. The rapid growth of the fast food industry and the demand for fast food products is the reason behind the Walmart chicken bite. Venturing into the fast food industry by Walmart was a big step, in particular this company aimed to change the current fast food market by offering the customers healthy fast food chicken bites. The business idea behind the Walmart chicken bite was to bring a new perspective in the fast food industry via the production of healthy fast food and this was amid health concerns that have rocked the fast food industry over the years.

Therefore, the aim to offer healthy alternatives was the driving force behind the Walmart chicken bite. Moreover, the idea of being unique also pushed Walmart to venture into the fast food industry. The company hoped that by joining this industry it would be able to offer its customers takeaway delicacies that are healthy. With this, the company aimed at targeting customers who take precautions on what they eat. The publicly traded name for this company is Walmart Inc (Brea‐Solís, Casadesus‐Masanell, & Grifell‐Tatjé, 2015).

Being the largest retailer in the world means that; the company has been able to live according to its mission statement, vision statement and its core values. The vision statement of Walmart is based on the idea of being a leader in the retail industry and also achieving the aspect of customer satisfaction. Secondly, the mission statement revolves around providing quality services and products to the consumers at an affordable amount. Its core values revolve around respect, excellence and integrity. Walmart chicken bite has a number of target stakeholders. It is clear that the target stakeholders will have a relationship to the mission, vision and values of the company. To start with, the customers to the Walmart chicken bite can be described as one of the target stakeholders. In this case, it is evident that as stakeholders, the customers are interested to be provided with quality products at an affordable price.

Consequently, the idea of affordability is in line with the mission statement. Additionally, through affordability, the company will be able to live according to its vision statement and core values. Secondly, the employees can also be described as one of the important target stakeholders. This is because they ensure that the company is able to deliver quality products and in this case quality fast food products to the consumers. This eventually leads to customer satisfaction that eventually results to brand loyalty. Hence, satisfaction of the employees via addressing issues touching on job security leads to better customer service, which results to customer satisfaction. Therefore, Walmart should ensure that it puts issues of job security at hand to ensure that this reflects their set mission, vision and core values (Balmer, 2008).

As a fast food restaurant it is evident that the government is also a major stakeholder. This is because the government is responsible for coming up with various legislations touching on food safety. It is evident that fast food products have been blamed for the rise in lifestyle diseases such as obesity. For this reason, Walmart should ensure that its food products are safe for human consumption and also raise concerns on the various issues that the company feels are not being addressed by the government especially on food safety. This will ensure that the company lives to its set goals and objectives. Lastly, we have the suppliers. Research has shown that, as a fast food restaurant, the company will be in need of suppliers from the various suppliers. Therefore, as target stakeholders for this fast food restaurant the suppliers should be able to offer quality products that will match the needs of the customers.

Current Trends: Business Environment of Walmart Chicken Bites

Just like any other company, Walmart strives to achieve its strategic competitiveness and stay ahead of competitors. However, this goal is influenced by both external and internal environmental aspects. Additionally, Walmart has stores that are flooded by customers due to the fast growing business of fast foods. However, the employees do not match the number of customers flooded in the stores. It is normal to have a small number of registers of cash open despite the long queues of people especially during busy periods such as back to school seasons. This is likely to affect the running of the chicken bites company because, most people in the U.S. have no time and money to purchase healthy foods. Their option is therefore fast foods and they would ultimately resort to a widely recognized company brand such as Walmart Chicken Bites Stores.

The external aspects of an organization’s environment are classified in three groupings: the competitors’ aspects, industry and general (Osuoha, 2012). In general, Walmart’s brand is very much recognized all over the world. However, it is largely painted negatively. Walmart has been known out there as a company that does not treat its workers or employees right (Frue, 2018). Walmart is more likely to employ part-time employees over full-time workers in their stores. According to Frue (2018), Walmart is known for putting up smaller stores that are out of business, thus creating hostile relations with the people it influences.

This means that customers may look for alternative means such as Costco and where they would find multiple products that they would like in one place.

In the current market that is characterized by customers that purchasing items online or through mobile shopping, it is now clear that physical retail stores are saturated especially those operated by the biggest retail chains in the U.S. (Marcilla, 2014). Therefore, downsizing the number and size of stores has become retail stores trend in the market. Following these trends, the buying behaviors of customers will definitely change. Walmart’s customers will either have to find alternative means or queue for long time period before being served in the few stores remaining. Alternatively, they would have to order from the internet even during busy schedules in consideration of preparation time and delivery time.

Higher Employee Turnover Rate

The fact that Walmart is painted negatively by people due to its alleged mistreatment of employees is likely to affect the fast food business negatively. For instance, the rate of employee turnover is likely to increase, but because the fast food business is increasingly growing, the company is likely to hire part-time workers to address the turnover rate, which would even be a sound environment for the alleged mistreatment of workers. Additionally, the putting up of smaller business, which is Walmart famous business move (Frue, 2018) is most likely to affect the business of chicken bites as towns people are negatively affected by these smaller stores in the U.S.

Stiff Competition

Additionally, Walmart’s biggest competitors Costco and Target have recently gained public support and also provide multiple products and services in one store for customers (Frue, 2018). This means that Walmart would lose many of its customers to Target and Costco as well as experienced employees.

Workplace inequality and Harassment has become a very sensitive topic in the business world from the beginning of 2018. In February 2017, a publisher wrote an article about harassment and sexism during her time working with Uber. By the end of 2017, such stories had built up making it clear that women in every kind of industry have had to face widespread sexual harassment, corporate policies and cultures that have been fashioned to silence them and to disempower them (McPherson, 2018). If the year 2017 was concerned with speaking the facts in relation to power, then 2018 definitely focuses on the firm changes to these, both in regards to policies of internal reporting as well as dealing with workplace inequality. Given Walmart brand does not have an admirable record of equality and treatment of employees; it is likely to be on the spotlight this year.

This means that the company would have to invest in research and evaluation on food as well as its suppliers before dispensing to customers.

Additionally, prioritizing data protection and privacy is also a business ethics that has hit the business politics in the contemporary world. Data breaches flew under the media radar mainstreaming (McPherson, 2018). McPherson (2018) attests that data protection and privacy has to be the priority agenda for the ethics issues that companies face. This has especially been on the radar for decades by top officials in companies. With the ongoing breaches, it is important that organizations protect the personal information of the staff and stakeholders. This however, is likely to be under ethical dilemma if the company is facing serious lawsuits for instance. That said, data privacy and protection is one area that executives anticipate increase in resources in the next two years (Maloni & Brown, 2006). Walmart is not an exception.

Inclusion of Women

This means that Walmart must also adjust to recruit a significant number of women and also treat all employees with integrity and fairness. Walmart is known for having lower operating expenses compared to the industry average. It has a record of achieving a cost leadership position. Therefore, it will have to recruit more women and ensure that the code of ethics is in alignment with the international employment standards of treating women with fairness, dignity and integrity.

Decline in Cost Leadership Position

Also, its cost leadership position is likely to decline due to implementation of such programs. Thus, the price leadership, which is at the central stage of Walmart’s strategy, is likely to be compromised especially with the reported accusations for mistreatment of women. Funds would be channeled to address such allegations in court and in the implementation of resolutions in the company. Additionally, downsizing is likely including increasing the laying off of employees, and cancelation of contracts with important stakeholders in order to make sure that funds are channeled towards addressing sustainability issues that would most likely impact negatively to the success of the company.

Revision of the Company’s Culture

As the world population continues to grow rapidly, workforce also grows when it comes to diversity. This implies that Walmart will have to establish company cultures, products and experiences that speak to various perspectives and identities. For instance, some cultures prefer their food spicy while other would like the original taste of chicken. Therefore, Walmart has to include various chicken bites that would speak to its various customers especially given that it is located in the U.S., a country with myriad cultures for customers.

Vulnerability of Partners

Numerous stores of Walmart have McDonalds’ restaurants in them to develop Walmart’s brand (Hayden et al, 2002). Ethical roles to customers lay strong foundation of protection of legal aspects. From a federal perspective, The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is in charge of enforcing consumer protection laws. At FTC, the Bureau of Consumer Protection is responsible for protecting consumers from fraudulent, deceptive and unfair practices. This means that Walmart shall have to work with FTC in decision-making to ensure that the chicken bites are not harmful to the consumers and meet the FTC food standards.

The way Americans consume food has dramatically changed in the past fifty years (Weiss, 2014). In the modern world, Americans are hardly linked to land and the people that produce their food. However, this is not the only issue.

Low wages for the Employees

Firstly, in the U.S., there is a specific amount of ‘to-do,’ regarding fast food employees who have constantly requested for pay rise and in some cases, turnover rate has gone up to prove a point. It is evident that the fast food employees earn a minimum wage and even though some of them make more than the minimum amount, they are still below the poverty line as the corporations in the fast food industry make millions of moneys. In 2012, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that seven million people in the U.S. were employees in the fast food industry including over 500, 000 cooks, 3.4 million counter employees, and 2.9 million in the department of serving and preparation of food (Weiss, 2014). On average, the pre-tax yearly income for these employees was approximated to about $18,770, which accounts for about $9 per hour (Weiss, 2014). For someone in a family of three, that is below the poverty line of the federal government of $19.530. For the 3.6 million workers that earn the minimum amount of wage or less, their most pre-tax income, which is about $15,080, puts them below the line of poverty, say for a household of two people (Weiss, 2014).

Workers in the fast food industry protested to have a pay rise including benefits and hourly amount of between 13USD and 15USD. However, this influences the fast food gurus such as Walmart which would cause the food prices to rise. Many people that patronize restaurants that make fast foods do this due to the fact that the food is cheap and fast. Also, fast foods are in most cases connected to obesity. However, this may implicate the health benefits in real life.

According to the vision statement of Walmart, the firm looks into its success from the founder’s spectrum. Its founder, Sam Walton’s ideals are enshrined in the vision statement of the company is, ‘to be the best retailer in the hearts and minds of consumers and employees,’ (Ferguson, 2017). Therefore, Walmart will have to increase the wages of its employees, lower their prices or maintain (given customers have hardly complained about Walmart’s high priced foods) as well as the quality of foods in accordance to the food protection and safety agencies’ stipulations.

This is likely to enhance the company’s reputation as well attract more customers because the food is of quality, affordable prices and with good customer service from employees. Given that the company has already realized the ‘best retailer’ section of its vision, Walmart will look into maintaining quality products by investing in research and development as well as hiring based on integrity, fairness, diversity, and inclusion code of conduct that does not favor anyone, in order to avoid the issues highlighted above such as inequality, women sexual abuse and employee underpayment. Through the low prices of other Walmart’s products, the company adheres to its mission statement. Therefore, Walmart chicken bites will not be an exception.

Furthermore, the company will partner with compliance agencies Federal Trade Commission and the Bureau of Consumer Protection, Food and Drug Administration, the Federal Communications Commission and the Consumer Product Safety Commission. This will further expose the company’s new brand- chicken bites to more consumers as highlighted by the regulations’ bodies.

Walmart will establish an Ethics Office and spread to its stakeholders, an ethical corporate culture. This office is responsible for making ethical decisions basing on the ethics helpline and the world statement of ethics. The established helpline in the company will help associates to be in touch with the company in regards to ethical matters decision-making. The company will also establish a team under ethical standards department who will be responsible for monitoring the supplier factories’ compliance with the corporation’s local laws and standards for suppliers.

Sustainability

The company will be releasing its global compliance program report showing the resolutions and the approaches for addressing issues that arise. These reports will entail areas in systems, processes, policies and people. Moreover, a corporate division will be established combining legal matters, investigations, compliance, and ethics into one whole and these will always be reported to the executive team of the global governance. Lastly, the company is looking into investing in research and development by hiring experts in key areas to advice of the key matters of concern like food safety, anti-corruption, equality and fairness. These measures will help the company avoid the tertiary impacts of unhealthy eating such as health costs.

Besides, it will also increase the lifespan of the Americans given health concerns are very sensitive now in the country. The company would also elevate its position above its competitors that focus of processing foods that are accompanied by chemicals posing a threat to human and environment health. To do this, Walmart will partner with companies that promote healthy eating foods in order to promote its brand. In the modern world, people purchase goods and services basing on the various in relation to the past (Mahdi & Sadrinia, 2014). With the rates of obesity shooting up over the years, consumers have become more attentive to what they consume. Adults especially look for factors like quality and prices and therefore they would spend their time to shop and purchase their items.

With these trends in place, decision-making process will have to include external review and evaluation of Walmart’s chicken bites from ethics and regulatory agencies, before presenting the products to consumers. Besides, it would keep the company off scandals such as corruption and sexual harassment and lawsuits that derail the companies’ progress and jeopardize their image in the long-run.
