A. Narrative Hook​: One of my favorite fairy tales growing up was a story of James

Thurber’s about a princess who wanted the moon for herself. I loved its wry

humor, and I loved the way the princess and the jester solve the problem together

when the important royal court advisors cannot. Yet the moon is a fascinating

topic, not just for fairy tales, but for scientists and philosophers, poets and

astronomers. How did the moon get here?

B. Background Information​: (This is where you define important terms, and provide

context for your topic.) “Selenology” is defined as “​the branch of ​astronomy

concerned with the ​moon​, its ​physical​ characteristics, ​nature​, ​origin​, etc.”

(“selenology”).The moon is a remarkable component of our night sky, and has

fascinated people throughout history. According to Peter Tyson, “[m]any cultures,

from ancient times to the present day, have even worshipped it as a deity.” From

the ancient Greeks to modern day, theories have developed about our most

important satellite’s origins.

C. Thesis Statement​: While theories surrounding the moon’s origins developed

before lunar vistations, the Apollo missions have provided astronomers with more

accurate information about the Moon and its origins, and our analysis of this data

is improving.
