Please write TWO essays, choosing from among the three topics below.

This is an exam, not a research paper. You shouldn’t go beyond the class sessions and assigned readings for our course, but you should show off your knowledge of them.

Please submit two copies. One should go to your Teaching Assistant in the usual way, and the other should be submitted as an Assignment on eLearn. This second copy is for general use (e.g., by your instructor).

T : To what extent is environmentalism an ideology, on a par with others? Is it like a watermelon--green on the outside and red (in the sense of socialism, not the Republican Party) on the inside? T : What is neoliberalism, and why have people, such as Wendy Brown, portrayed it as a threat to democracy? Is it? T : People imagine that the United States might be on the verge of a civil war, but no one imagines this of Denmark, Finland, New Zealand, Norway, and Sweden. Is it because they have fuller democracies than that of the United States? Is it because their citizens have a stronger commitment to democracy than those of the United States? Is it because, more than the United States, they have qualities that Aristotle associated with a middle class? These questions can’t be answered fully in a brief essay—and they’d be hard to answer in a much longer work. But please make some useful comments that draw, of course, on  .
