Prompt:

On Oct.3, 2020, Pope Francis released his latest encyclical letter Fratelli Tutti (“On Fraternity and Social Friendship”). Chapter 2 (p.14-22) of this text presents an extended reflection on the Good Samaritan parable, which makes visible the “stranger on the road” in accordance with the preferential option for the poor that we have been exploring throughout this quarter.

Similarly, our course has asked us to make a paradigmatic shift to the margins when exploring different forms of injustice in society. As De La Torre notes, “only from the margins of power and privilege can a fuller and more comprehensive understanding of the prevailing social structures be ascertained, not because those on the margins are more astute, but because they know what it means to be a marginalized person attempting to survive within a social context designed to benefit the privileged few at their expense” (13).

This assignment invites you to place ch.2 of Pope Francis’ letter into dialogue with the poor/marginalized identified in one of the themes we have explored during the second part of this quarter: environment, national poverty, healthcare, incarceration, affirmative action, or feminism in the US. In this paper, you will argue for an original thesis that understands the relationship between love and justice in the preferential option for the poor within a neoliberal context. This thesis must directly concern this preferential option (and its biblical/theological basis) in relation to the socio-historical context that led to this wounded relationship. Your paper must also include practical actions that can be taken to heal and restore right relationality between those involved.

For this paper, please begin with the texts provided in class and then add outsides sources for a total of at least 6-8 peer-reviewed journal articles/books in your bibliography. You may use newspapers/online news articles if the situation is recent but limit yourself only to 1-2 newspaper articles and then build on your argument through library research.
