Classification of Olympic Alpine Skiing Events by Discipline

Alpine skiing events have been contested at every Winter Olympics since their inception. Alpine skiing involves racing down a snow-covered mountain. Alpine skiing is differentiated from other types of skiing, such as cross-country and ski jumping, by the use of skis with fixed-heel bindings. At the Winter Olympics, medals are awarded in four different types of alpine skiing. Slalom and Giant Slalom are considered technical events, while Super-G and Downhill are considered speed events. Technical events are comprised of two runs on different courses on the same mountain and reward athletes’ ability to make skillful turns. Slalom skiing tests the athlete’s skill at maneuvering down the mountain between poles, also called, gates. A slalom course typically features 55-75 gates for men and 40-60 for women. The Giant Slalom tests the athlete’s skill at maneuvering down the mountain between gates spaced farther apart than in the Slalom event. A Giant Slalom course typically features 56-70 gates for men and 46-58 for women. Speed events test athletes’ ability to maximize the rate at which they descend the mountain. Competitors in speed events make only one run down the course. Super-G, or Super-Giant Slalom, requires the skier to maneuver between gates as in other slalom events. However, because the gates are placed at greater distances than in the Giant Slalom, skiers can reach speeds approaching that of Downhill racers. Unlike other slalom courses, Super-G courses include jumps. Downhill skiing tests the athlete’s skill at becoming aerodynamically efficient. In the “tuck” position common among Downhill racers, a skier can reach speeds exceeding 90 miles per hour. Because it combines skill, risk, and strategy in a breathtaking mountain setting, Alpine skiing will continue to be a staple of the Winter Olympics. In the future, however, its popularity may be surpassed by Freestyle skiing, popularized by ESPN’s annual Winter X Games, which has been part of the Winter Olympics since the 1992 games in Albertville, France.

PART 5: Resume—30 points

Using the information below, create a resume for the fictional Sally Sullivan. Be sure to hit CTRL+Enter to start your document on a new page.

Sally Sullivan graduated in May 2018 with a BA in Child Development from Large State University in College Town, Ohio. Because she may still be looking for a job after she moves out of her apartment in College Town, she thinks it’s important to include her parents’ address for important correspondence. They live at 310 Shady Oak Circle in Skokie, Illinois 60076. Her cell phone number is (123) 555-7890. While she’s in school, she lives at 110 Alumni Drive, Apt. 3D, College Town, OH 54321.

She is really interested in an opening she learned about through Large State U’s Career Services Office. Specifically, Painted Desert Children’s Camp in Sedona, Arizona is currently seeking a new Activities Director. Painted Desert is a year-round camp for children recovering from serious illnesses.

Right now, Sally works as a Child Supervisor at University Daycare on campus. She has worked there since November 2015. Most days she prepares and serves snacks to the 4-6 year olds. She also plays games with them and organizes arts and crafts projects. Last year, as part of a project for one of her child development classes, Sally created an educational puppet show about good nutrition and the food pyramid. She now puts on a puppet show once a month at the daycare.

Since she was a senior in high school, she has volunteered to help with Vacation Bible School at the First Methodist Church of College Town. She has also volunteered with the Special Olympics since June 2016.

After her freshman year (2014) at Large State, she worked as a nanny for Tom and Betsy Becker. The Beckers are a wealthy family in College Town. (Mr. Becker is a lawyer with Becker and Associates and Sally definitely wants to use him as a reference. His work phone number is (123) 555-0141. They have three children who were ages 4, 6 and 10 when Sally worked with them. Sally was responsible for preparing their breakfast and lunch four days a week and took the kids to their swimming lessons. What she enjoyed most, though, was helping the oldest child improve his reading skills. While working for the Beckers, she organized a kickball tournament for the kids in the neighborhood.

During the fall semester of her senior year (2017), Sally held an internship at the Ronald McDonald House in downtown College Town. Her primary duty was to welcome families and provide any necessary hospitality. Sometimes she supervised volunteer groups who came in to prepare and serve a meal to the guests.

At Large State, Sally was Treasurer of the Water-skiing Club and a member of Alpha Chi Omega. This year she has been the sorority’s liaison to the school’s Pan-Hellenic Council.

For her other reference, Sally plans on using the Curriculum Coordinator at University Daycare, Libby Dean. The daycare’s phone number is (123) 555-8733.

PART 6—Job Application Letter (30 points)

Ms. Jane Grover

Director of Personnel

Painted Desert Children’s Camp

1 Camp Road

Sedona, AZ 86636

Hi Jane:

In August I’ll be graduating from Large State University. So I’ll naturally be looking for a job. It’d be awesome if I could come and work for you at Painted Desserts Camp I know I could really make a difference.

As a student here at Large State, I’ve had so many experiences both in the classroom and at work that make a me perfect fit for the job. Being a nanny and working at our university’s day care facility has taught me more about working with children than all of my classes combined. Of course I’ve learned a lot from my professors and I’ll learn a lot from you too. I’m responsible, compassionate, and hard-working. I’m also good at interacting with people, that is something I’ve received high marks for on all my performance evaluations.

Please let me know when I can come to Arizona for an interview. I’m looking forward to it.

Sincerely,

Sally Sullivan ;)
