Application instructions

The application applies what has been learned in a course to a real-life situation or practice.

Generally, the application involves developing and where practicable implementing an intervention to

produce a positive change. If the application is a proposed intervention it must include enough information to

show that it is implementable and has a reasonable likelihood of producing the outcome intended. If the

application is implemented it must provide enough information not only of what was implemented but also

of the context in which the implementation occurred and the results of and reactions to the implementation.

The application normally consists of two parts, a presentation and commentary or narrative.

Each cohort member presents (either in a face-to-face setting or through a WebEX meeting) a slide show

(videos or other media presentations can be used in lieu of PowerPoint slides) to the entire cohort or

team. The PowerPoint presentation should not exceed the 10-20-30 format: no more than 10 slides (the

title slide and the references slide are not included in the 10), no more than an oral 20-minute

presentation, and no slide with a font size smaller than 30 points. The second part of the assignment is

the content of the application.

Use the notes pages in PowerPoint to develop your oral presentation. Your notes pages should total

2500-3000 words. However, do NOT use the notes pages to show your presentation, use the slide show view.

You may want to print your slides in the notes view have those before you as you present your slides in the

slide view to the cohort. If you want, you can use your notes as you present your slides – however, try not to

read verbatim from your notes, in part because it will take longer than 20 minutes and in part because it is

never wise to read a presentation. Alternatively, you can produce your oral comments in a Word file and

upload this file along with your slides. If you take this option, please ensure that a reader can match the text

to the slides, and perhaps the best way to do this is to have the slide number at the top of the page of text

that deals with that slide. If the application is presented as a PowerPoint application submit the slides in the

eLearn course with the presentation script in either the notes section or a separate word document. Because

of the wide variability of the application assignments, we encourage cohort members to obtain the approval

of their facilitator before proceeding on the assignment.

Grading of application

Grading of the application is based on (1) applicability to the purpose/intent of the assignment,

(2) contextualized problem definition, (3) creativity, learning and innovation, (4) organization and

thought development, (5) presentation, and (6) publication style development. The applicability to the

purpose/intent of assignment is especially important because most applications in the DEL courses are

key assignments for program outcomes. Thus they must be oriented to the program outcome for which

they are identified as a key assignment.

interpretation of the literature to the study and practice of executive leadership, referencing

DEL program outcomes as relevant

o Demonstrates a strong contextual perspective, consideration of historical patterns,

stakeholder analysis, and awareness of complexity

 Creativity, learning, and innovation 20%

o Considers two or more rival possibilities and their implications for addressing the

purpose/objective of the intervention,

o Shows how the intervention could be evaluated or assessed.

o Embeds processes for scanning, learning & creativity for future viability

 Organization and thought development 10%

o Demonstrates an effective synthesis and integration not only of course material (required

readings plus references for in-depth paper) but also demonstrates research beyond what

heretofore was accomplished in the course,

o Clearly states the importance and relevance of all additional research and shows a level of

research beyond that shown for the in-depth paper,

o Contains no gaps in reasoning, shows a high degree of relevance and logic, and thinking and

writing are appropriate for a scholar-practitioner.

o Arrives at well-reasoned conclusions supported by evidence

 Presentation 15%

o Oral communication is very effective and the content is well communicated and accomplished

in a timely fashion,

o Engagement with the audience is sustained and Q and A and discussion is well- handled, and

o Slides and other graphics or representations are engaging and communicate the key points in

a direct and professional way, and overall the charts / visualizations (non-verbal aids) are very

effectively used and the presentation is highly professional.

o Is well organized, has good flow, and uses heading and subheadings appropriately,

o Purpose is clearly and succinctly stated,

o Writing is precise, clear, and coherent, and

o All requirements of the APA publication manual are met.
