Final Assignment:Useful Object

Art 131

Points 100

In Fusion 360, using parametric modeling techniques, create a useful object to be 3D printed in which the function coincides with an already existing object around your home, office, or something you interact with daily. Designs must incorporate at least 2 or more varying ‘bodies’ (i.e. scale and/or shape) that are combined into a single solid.

For the example, we’ll be doing a lampshade in class for the HEMMA CORD SET available at IKEA. You may certainly do this too. But it is not required. What is required is that you meet the FINAL FUNCTIONAL DESIGN CRITERIA OUTLINED BELOW.

OTHER IDEAS

Unique photo frame

Charging stand for tablet/phone (w/ built in speaker amps)

Toilet paper roll holder A Car

DON’T FORGET TO LEAVE ROOM FOR THE BULB! (DURING DEMO)

Taking function into consideration, we’ll need to leave a 1/4” (127mm) space all the way around for incase we have to get our grubby hands up in there to change the bulb (approximately 15000 hours from now….but you know…..it may happen-just sayin)

TO PRINT

Be sure the object you want to print is of correct scale. Otherwise it is useless. Export your design as a .stl for print. Depending on complexity and machine time, we may decide it’s best to outsource some of these.

Your file(s) are limited by the dimensions achievable by the printers. Therefore, check the materials library of Shapeways or if you’re prepping for the Ultimakers verify the volume is within the dimensions for the Ultimaker2+ printers ( see .4mm specs: ). Printability is factored into final grade.

FINAL FUNCTIONAL DESIGN REQUIREMENTS:

All final designs must be discussed with the instructor before embarking. This is to help alleviate or think through potential issues….functional, legal, or other.

Wall Thickness: between 1.5mm - 4mm

Max Dimensions: 7x7x7 ” (WxHxD)

Total print time: < 30hours (See cura estimates)

Weight: <250grams (See cura estimates)
