Data

According to research done on healthy people 2020, it was considered that approximately 33% of the people in the United States identified themselves as belonging to an ethnic minority group in 2008. Also, about 70.5 million people lived in rural areas. In New York County (Manhattan), the current population is estimated to be 1.6 million people, according to the 2019 census (United States Census Bureau. 2020). In this population, the number of African Americans alone accounts for 17.9%, while Hispanic and Latino account for 25.9% (United States Census Bureau. 2020). This population is considered to occupy the low-class neighborhoods of East Harlem. In terms of housing units, there are around 893000 housing units where the owners hold only 24% of the units (United States Census Bureau. 2020). The family and living arrangements in the county are varied where the average persons living in a housing unit is 2.07. In the county, the education level for most of the individuals in high school bachelor's degree. In matters of health, the number of individuals with disabilities who are under the age of 65 years is 6.1%, while individuals without health insurance with over 25 years are 6.1% (United States Census Bureau. 2020). Economically, individuals who are in civilian labor force account for 67% with age's a16 years and above.

Analysis

According to the above data, it is considered that life in New York County is excellent and high. This situation is associated with the data provided about the various aspects of being addressed in the data ranging from population size, level of education, employment, housing, and health care. What differs in the data is that the figures address the general picture of the country but does not address life in the different neighborhoods within the county. This situation gives a broad view of the entire county without necessarily pointing out the various challenges affecting poor communities, which are occupied by low-class individuals who are from minority groups in the United States. East Harlem neighborhood, for example, provides a different picture from the census report as it is the home for people with Latino, Hispania, and African American backgrounds, and their level of life in the locality is very low (United States Census Bureau. 2020). The neighborhood is comprised of a large number of unemployed people, large families occupy different rental apartments, and they face difficulties in accessing health care services. Such aspects are considered to lead to the development of social problems such as crime and drug abuse. The poor environment that the people are living in is perceived to lead to the development of different health problems, and this gives an insight into the health disparities associated with different neighborhoods. The level of education is considered to influence the living standards of the individuals living in a given locality and also their access to various social services such as medical care.

Summary

The census gives a general picture of the living standards of a given locality. The living standards of the people living in a given area are determined by their incomes, housing, level of education, and their ability to access health care (Healthy People. 2020). Poor neighborhoods are associated with low literacy levels, unemployment, and poor housing. A poor environment is associated with the poor health of the people and low life expectancy. Poverty leads to the development of various social problems as people do not have activities to keep them busy (Healthy People. 2020). This aspect indicates why areas such as the East Harlem neighborhood are associated with elements such as crime and drug abuse.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the various social problems in East Harlem are associated with the lack of unemployment opportunities in the area. Also, this accounts for the increased number of inhabitants in the locality as the housing is cheaper, and large families live together. Due to the increased level of illiteracy among the minority groups, that is why the area is associated only with large numbers of Latinos, Hispania, and blacks as most of them are poor. Due to this reason, the region faces social problems such as drug abuse and crime since there are no job opportunities in the area (Healthy People. 2020). Therefore, the people are unable to acquire health insurance making them not to visit the various health centers in the area, making the individuals face numerous health challenges. This aspect is associated with increased medical campaigns in the area to fight the multiple illnesses in the area (Healthy People. 2020).
