INDIVIDUAL STUDENT PROFILE

This paper documents my current personal philosophy of learning as it is as I complete my first course in the journey to obtaining my Masters of ESL and Bilingual Education. I will describe aspects of my learning experience thus far. I also highlight three learning goals which I hope to achieve as a graduate professional. My goals are to create an empathetic and culturally aware learning environment, to use formative assessments and improve my communication in my teaching. I look forward to the challenges in becoming a better educator and utilizing my new knowledge in a professional setting upon completion of this program.

Personal Philosophy of Learning

I believe that educators need to offer meaningful learning experiences and promote an appreciation for diversity and a respect for self and others including our cultures in our dynamic global society. This personal philosophy of learning has changed and developed over several decades. As I commenced this master’s program, I gave much thought to what I would like to learn now as an experienced educator. What learning experience will help me improve, change, revolutionize my teaching. My experiences as an educator and my greatest learning experiences have gone hand in hand. It was not as a university student that I learned about education but as a teacher that I learned how much I did not know and began the process of learning to teach. In a bilingual school in Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago I learned to be passionate about teaching. I then moved to Latin America where I taught in varying environments for over twenty years. There I learned another language, culture and methods of teaching depending on the schools’ programs. Having reentered the US recently, I teach in a wealthy suburb of Chicago. It is a different school environment from any I have experienced. I may hail from the Midwest, but I am not familiar with much of the teaching procedures, jargon, technology and assessments. I chose to return to school to update myself in the US educational system.

Having pointed to the varying school communities I’ve experienced the essentials for the learning process remain the same. The critical components for the learning process that I have found to be universally essential are a nurturing learning environment, mutual respect between learner and educator, interest and meaningfulness of content, activities and objectives. I believe there are some aspects of teaching that I have mastered and since beginning this program, I recognize a few that need improvement. The goals I am dedicating myself to as a learner and teacher will improve my classroom environment and relationships. I feel the need to improve my informal assessments and riddle my lessons with these activities to keep learning well designed and purposeful. I also realize my struggle and avoidance to communicate through writing. I plan to develop and utilize my learning in the classroom as a graduate professional.

Goal Statement One

As an introduction to this program we were asked to acknowledge our biases. From this activity I developed the first personal goal I would like to work toward as I complete my education in this program. I want to translate the cultural awareness and empathy I develop and refine during my studies, to my work as an educator. My goal is to use my growing cultural awareness and empathy to create a learning community which reflects this awareness and empathy for every student. What we have reflected on and the

learning process we are embarking on will impact my perspective, my teaching and integral to this goal, create a community of culturally aware and empathetic learners. I have always established an environment of mutual respect and politeness. I would like to go beyond respect to creating increased cultural awareness and empathy in my classroom. I firmly believe in leading by example through consistent modeling of respectful actions, language and tone. By the end of this program my objective is to model and evoke cultural awareness, sensitivity and empathy toward every students’ culture. Because I believe empathy comes from a place of appreciating and valuing my students I will model this just as I model other behaviors I wish to teach. Through modeling empathy, I hope to create a space which nurtures acceptance. By understanding and sharing discoveries of my own and my family’s cultural identity, I hope to provide a non- threatening environment which encourages my students to explore and share their cultures. I would like to invite staff, parents and community members to collaborate with our class in enhancing our learning about cultures and diversity. By highlighting diversity and respect I believe the natural curiosity of young learners will aid in creating a culturally aware and empathetic group of students.

Goal Statement Two

During this course I had the opportunity to investigate and develop formative assessments for my interdisciplinary thematic unit. My goal throughout this program is to increase the quality and quantity of formative assessments I use in my classroom. I would like to embed informal assessments in my lessons which have clear outcomes and can provide immediate feedback for redirecting the lesson or for planning future lessons and formative assessments. I would like to create engaging informal assessments that monitor student progress on a daily basis. My goal is to become proficient in embedding informal assessments within and throughout the lesson. I would like to consistently integrate informal assessments into my lessons and instruction. I hope to improve my evaluation skills by using guiding questions and observing students’ activities to gather evidence of their understanding and performance levels.

Goal Statement Three

Another goal I would like to work on during this program is my written and oral communication. I would like to improve my communication in my courses at ACE and in my teaching. Clear communication is essential to success in my assignments and teaching. As a student, I want to improve my written expression and style. As a teacher, I want to focus on giving my students clear written and oral directions and objectives in my lessons. I also believe guiding questions and feedback are an important part of communication as an educator. My goal extends to increased and clear communication with families. I would like to increase the frequency and sensitivity of my communication. I would like this communication to inform families of our classroom activities and cultural discoveries. I would like to supplement my monthly newsletters with weekly communications of class activities and projects. Perhaps increased communication between the classroom and home will increase student led conversation about our diverse classroom. Ultimately, through improved communication I would like

to engage families and invite them to play a greater role in our classroom as helpers, presenters and cultural models. I believe by improving my writing abilities and confidence through assignments in this program, I will also increase my confidence and fluidity in communicating with my students and their families.

In conclusion, I look forward to this learning process and feel passionate about reaching my goals. I am excited to research and investigate language education and put into practice other understandings I acquire in this program. I am certain I will improve my writing skills throughout the course which will enhance my communication in my profession. I have a better understanding of how to utilize formative assessments as an essential tool in all of my lessons. The greatest challenge I foresee, will be creating an environment that nurtures respect, empathy and cultural awareness. My personal philosophy of learning and my past teaching experience has prepared me to accept this challenge. After completing this master’s program, I hope to continue my education as an educator.
