In-Class Essay
Fall 2018
· The in-class essay will be written during the time scheduled for the final examination.
· The essay will an answer this question: Of the films we watched this semester, both in and out of class, excluding the film upon which you wrote your research paper, which did you like most, or dislike least, and why? Your reasons for choosing one film over another should be several and should serve to organize the essay’s body paragraphs.
· In other words, you should devote a body paragraph to each of your reasons. Your body paragraphs should present intelligent, thoughtful justifications; they should not merely express your feelings, although your feelings are important and certainly a legitimate basis for selecting a film on which to write your essay.
· Each of your paragraphs, including the essay’s introduction and conclusion, should consist of carefully wrought sentences that convey your meaning intelligibly, concretely, and with specificity. The essay should be a minimum of 500 words. It can be more. In order to reach a minimum of 500 words, you will need to include details and examples that are relevant to your thesis.
· The essay should be grammatical, legible, double-spaced, written with blue or black pen on clean-edged, college-ruled notebook paper. During the exam, tables are to remain clear of everything except approved notebook paper, pens, correction fluid, and dictionaries.
