Grading

Introduction and discussion of film/show (10 points)

Does the author clearly introduce the film they’re analyzing with some context? Does the author give the reader a thesis about the paper so that the reader understands the purpose of the paper?

· 10 points: Clear introduction and purpose with a clear thesis statement

Definition of key sociological themes found in the film (20 points)

Does the author define and provide context for any sociological concepts they’re using (e.g., race, gender, etc.), citing Conley’s (or other articles from the class) work?

· 20 points: Defining concepts, with use of citations.

Discussion of the concepts (40 points)

Does the author provide analysis of the film, incorporating sociological concepts, showing how the themes are illustrated in the show/film with evidence from the show/film?

· 20 points: Analysis of the film, using sociological concepts/themes

· 20 points: Use of evidence from the film to support analysis

Organization and presentation of the paper (20 points)

Does the paper have an introduction, a body of well-developed paragraphs, and a conclusion? Does the author organize and present their thoughts in a way that is easy for the reader to follow?

· 20 points: well developed paragraphs and organized thoughts

Grammar, editing, concision, bibliography (10 points)

Is the paper edited for typos, passive language, and spelling? Does the author include a bibliography or reference page, citing sources in alphabetical order, and formatted according to an approved standard (MLA, APA, etc.)?

· 10 points: editing and concision—edits for extra, unnecessary words, passive language, and other typos, and includes a properly formatted bibliography/reference page
