Week 9 Overview - The Environment This week we will extend our discussion of corporate social responsibility to issues of the environment. As climate change increasingly shows, the way we've treated our planet has caused what is beginning to look like irreparable harm. We will need to explore a series of questions like, What is the environment? Is it a common good with objective criteria for its nurturing? How has capitalism in general, and traditional business practices more specifically, understood and utilized the environment? Can a socioeconomic system that uses the planet's labor and resources solely for the short-term interests of private profit for a few lead to anything other than environmental degradation? Can such a system foster the cultivation of those necessary social virtues and knowledges to care for our environmental common good? And which of the ethical paradigms (or combination) provides the best resources for the way forward?
