Modifiable Risk Factors for Cardiovascular Disease

Introduction

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide. They cause 17.5 million deaths annually; in addition to this, they are also the primary cause of mortality figures in most American countries, being responsible for 3 million years of disability (Gunby, 2018). In the United States, these diseases occupy the first place of morbidity and mortality in men and women over 45 years of age; The prevalence of this disease and death from this cause lead to them not only having an increase in the costs of health services for the country, but also an annual decline in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) (Graham, 2018).

Statement of the Problem

With the above problem and its implications, different types of populations are at risk of developing cardiovascular disease due to exposure to various modifiable risk factors such as obesity, smoking, sedentary lifestyle, alcoholism, stress, and non-modifiable risk factors. Within which are age, family history, and gender; the research results have supported this exposure carried out in all populations at the national and international levels (Graham, 2018); however, health personnel who promote the physical, mental and social well-being of people through promotion have been studied with little depth. and prevention; It should be noted that within this group of people are the nursing staff, where few studies address this problem, even though epidemiological data recognize that modifiable risk factors are also present in this population group where some of these are more prevalent (WHO, 2020).

Purpose of the Study

Create and consolidate preventive health maintenance strategies, and the results of this research are an incentive to continue studying the nursing staff in all aspects, not only concerning their health but also with their environment. Promote research with nursing professionals as a population group, to determine factors related to health and the environment. Promote the creation and consolidation of prevention and health maintenance strategies in nursing professionals

Research Question

In the nursing staff of a Miami Hospital Care (P), what is the prevalence of modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular diseases (CD) (I) after receiving training to identify the Obesity, smoking, sedentary lifestyle, alcoholism, stress, and non-modifiable risk factors, including age, family history, and gender (C) as the main causes of death from CD?

Hypothesis

Exposure to different modifiable risk factors such as obesity, smoking, sedentary lifestyle, alcoholism, stress, and non-modifiable risk factors, including age, family history, and gender; increases the probability of developing cardiovascular diseases in nursing staff, as it affects their physical, mental and social well-being.

Defining Study Variables and Operationalize Variables

The variables (dimensions) are determined based on what is established by the seventh report of the Joint Commission International (2018) as a cardiovascular risk factor.

Smoking, defined as the habit of smoking; this dimension has 7 items.

Sedentary, defined as no daily physical activity; this dimension has 3 items.

Arterial hypertension, defined as the level of systolic blood pressure (SBP) greater than or equal to 140 mm Hg, and the level of diastolic blood pressure (DBP) greater than or equal to 90 mm Hg; this dimension has 2 items.

Alcoholism, defined as dependence on alcohol intake equal to or greater than three drinks per week; this dimension has 3 items.

Diet, defined as the daily consumption of excess carbohydrates and saturated fat; this dimension has 7 items.

Stress, defined as the body's response to external (negative) conditions, such as work, economic, and family pressures; for this dimension, it has 6 items.
