Marketing Research Methodology

Introduction

Businesses regardless of the industry that they operate must conduct market research if their goal is to generate profit. Businesses that fail to conduct adequate research risk not knowing their customers’ needs and expectations. Consequentially, they risk developing products and services that will not sell. The above principles apply to coffee shops seeking to be profitable. There are five steps that businesses like my coffee shop need to consider to conduct proper market research.

Steps in the market research process

Definition of Research Objectives and Needs

There are five main steps in the market research process. The first step is the definition of objective and research needs. In the case of a coffee shop, the research objective is to know which are the best and worst coffee types for customers. By so doing, the shop gets to have a clear direction on which product needs to be marketed more and which needs to be done away with. Based on the objectives of the research, a local coffee shop needs to define what needs to be done for effective marketing research to happen (Dwivedi et al., 2020).

Developing a Research Design

The second step of the market research process for a local coffee shop is coming up with its research design. The shop must identify how it is going to conduct the research. My coffee shop market research will use the mixed method approach. The research will target coffee drinkers between 21 and 35 years old. Through the definition of the research, my coffee shop has a guiding framework for the research.

A mixed approach research design was adopted for this study. The approach is the most appropriate design for this study because it is effective in explaining relationships and themes about a certain phenomenon. In addition, the approach is appropriate for the study as it is useful in the collection of opinions and views of people. This research design increases the validity and reliability of the study. Data collection followed all standard procedures beginning with seeking all research approvals.

Data Collection Process

The third step is the data collection process. For effective market research, a local coffee shop needs to define how data for the research is going to be collected. There are various data collection methods and they include interviews, observations, surveys, and case studies amongst others (Yates & Leggett, 2016). For my coffee shop, the survey data collection method will be used. At least 30 coffee drink consumers will take part in the research. The sample population filled out a Likert scale question and later took part in an oral open-ended interview. By identifying a research approach and a data collection method for the research, a business increases its chance of benefiting from research findings.

Data Analysis

The fourth step is the analysis of the data collected and the development of insights from the data. Data collected must be analyzed and the results of the analysis should develop insights of themes that can guide local coffee shops in identifying trends in its industry. The goal of the analysis was to identify what the study populations thought of the coffee offered. The views of the population were considered to represent the views of all coffee consumers.

Data analysis was conducted using descriptive analysis and percentage analysis, followed by its transcription from the tape recorder then the analysis was performed based on interviews. Various ethical considerations were observed throughout the study. The researcher also ensured that all the research processes do not harm the respondents in any way either physically, emotionally or any other way. The privacy of respondents was also respected in the study. The researcher remained clear of any subjectivity in analyzing the data and was also proactive at preventing anything that will be harmful to the participants.

Trustworthiness and generalizability of the Study

Trustworthiness in research shows the extent to which the findings can be replicated as well as how credible the research findings are (Maxwell, 2017). For a research to be termed trustworthy it must demonstrate that it is free from bias through the methods it has used in both data collection and analysis. In addition, it must show that the research has a direct impact on an existing population. The research findings or recommendations can be implemented on another population other than that which is under study and the phenomena they are concerned must offer improved results. In other words, other researcher focusing on a particular topic should be able to replicate the findings of a study that is considered reliable. Findings must be consistent for various studies focusing on the same topic.

To build on the trustworthiness of the research, there were two main things that were done. The first thing is getting an outsider to review and examine the research process. Whenever a third party is introduced to a research process the research has to be conducted in a manner that is simple enough for the third party to understand and to explain if there is a need. The second way in which trustworthiness is built in qualitative research is through the recording of the research process. Recording allows other parties to examine whether the research was conducted correctly and offers an opportunity for the research to be replicated. To ensure trustworthiness in the study, the researcher recorded all data collection and data analysis processes. All interviewers will be recorded after they consent to the process.

Credibility refers to the quality of being trusted and believed in. In checking for the credibility of the research, methods triangulation was used. Different data collection methods will be used to check the consistency of the findings. One threat to the credibility of the study is the study population. The population was from one age group, mid-adults. The researchers utilized an open-ended interview session to drive the bias out.

Generalizability refers to the generalization of research findings. For generalization purposes, data was collected from a diverse population to ensure that the findings are transferable to as many different populations as possible. One of the main threats to transferability is poor data collection methods. If biased data collection methods are used then it is not possible for the results to be replicated and for the research findings to be generalized. To ensure that the above threat was eliminated, the researchers documented the context of the participants.

Dependability refers to the reliability and consistency of research findings. In establishing dependability, the study was used to ensure that it had as little bias as possible and that it is reliable. A marketing research advisor reviewed all documents. In addition, the whole research process was documented in a research paper that detailed the data collection process as well as the analysis process. From the paper that act as a report, the researcher offers a sequence of events that can be replicated to confirm the research findings.

Confirmability in qualitative research refers to the degree in which research findings can be corroborated or confirmed by other people. In establishing the research confirmability, an audit trail was established. The audit trail detailed the data collection methods and procedures as well as the research methodology. Through the audit trail, it is possible to confirm whether the research was done in the right manner as well as whether the research findings are a representation of the research.

Action Plan

The last step of the market research process is the development of an action plan. After trends and insights are identified, the next step is for the coffee shop to make use of the research data. Based on the results and recommendations of research, an organization can decide to ignore the recommendations or implement them. If the decision is to implement the recommendation, then an action plan must be formulated to guide the process. The action plan should detail who is responsible for the implementation, how long the implementation is going to take, and the expected outcomes of the implementation.

In the case of my shop, the results of the research reveal that the majority of coffee consumers love cappuccino and Americano. Also, the least liked coffee is espresso. Bearing the above in mind, a bulk of the marketing machinery should be directed towards marketing cappuccino and Americano so that the coffee shop gets to sell the two types of coffee as much as possible. To ensure that the correct marketing strategy is implemented, the head of marketing will lead the marketing of the two types of coffee. The duration of the marketing campaign is three months. Three months will be sufficient for the coffee shop to build its customer base by 20% due to the marketing strategy implemented.

Conclusion

A business stands to benefit a lot by understanding what moves their customers. Through research, businesses like my coffee shop get to understand trends in the industry that they operate in. For any business to succeed in its market research, it has to consider the five steps of the market research process.
