Fighting Obesity

As fast pace and urbanization is getting higher and higher, people begin to rely on fast food, which can save their time. Most of time, fast food is junk food that has many fats and calories. Therefore, more and more people are becoming obese. In fact, if you have obesity, too many fats will make a lot of negative effects in your body, such as cancer. From my perspective, we need to keep fighting obesity because of the harm of obesity itself, skyrocketing rates of obesity and the bad food environment. What’s more, I strongly argue that collect tax from soda or sugar drinks and promote healthy life style to encourage people doing exercises and having healthy food so that people can get away from obesity.

The harm of obesity itself is the most important reason that we have to control obesity strictly. Obesity can lead people to get other serious diseases easily. "People who shrug off weight gain do so at their own risk -- risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and other life-threatening conditions," argued by Dr. Christopher Murray, director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington. Obesity epidemic causes result of so many terrible diseases. We can’t afford to let obesity keep spreading as virus. Furthermore, Obesity not only influences your own body but also your children’s. “Children of obese parents at risk of developmental delays, says study.” (Senthilngam, 9) If people indulge them to get fat, it not only influences their own health but also their children’s. In a way, fighting obesity will improve your health and protect your children’s health. Obviously, obesity brings too many negative effects to us; therefore, we have to stop the number of people who get obesity growing and control the number to be steady.

The bad food environment is also a very serious reason for people to get obesity. "Many food companies advertise and package unhealthy food that appeal to children." by Andrew jacobs, a writer of New York Times. Today, food industries are over commercialized and they neglect of food health. They use trinkets to attract young consumers to improve their sales. However, they never care about consumers’ health. What will happen if they eat this "poison" too much? If they get sick or obese because of having these food, I don't think the companies will be take care of them. Furthermore, many food products don't have warning labels to show that they have high salt, sugar, fat and calories. Based on the article "Can Information Fight Fat?” when alternative food products are clearly unhealthy, people will always purchase the healthy one. Without these warning labels, it is hard for consumers to make the correct or healthy choice. In this kind of good environment, it is so easy to get obesity, especially under the misleading approach of food companies.

The last reason that we need to fight obesity is the rate of obesity is growing rapidly, especially in children. " Based on record from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, aged 2-19 was 10 percent in 1008-1994 and raised to 17.2 percent for 2013-14. (Patel, 6)  Not only adults but also children are influenced by obesity. As we all know, children are the future of the world. Their health problems influence their whole families, even the next generation of the whole world. On the other hand, an example in Chile today, there are three- quarter of adults are over weight or obese. (Jacobs, 18) It is already a serious problem in Chile. If people still react like before, obesity could be the most serious disease in the world.

Facing today’s obesity situation, we need to keep fighting and find practical and effective ways to solve the difficulties. From my perspective, government needs to collect tax from soda or sugar drinks to limit people who drink too much. In fact, city Berkeley has made a great achievement after passing a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages. After one year, researchers find that sales of sugar-sweetened drinks fell by close to 10 percent, and sales of water increase by 16 percent. (Sifferlin, 3) It appears to be working and the way to impose restrictions on obesity needs to be generalized to other areas. Also, government has to set up more parks to encourage people doing sports or other exercises. “One-third of the world's population carrying excess weight fueled by poor diets and reduced physical activity.” (Senthilingam, 2) If we set up more parks, the parents may take their children to do some activities, at free time. They will not worry no plan on the weekend or have no place to go with their children. If we popularize these two ways strictly, I believe we will receive greatly fruitful result.

All in all, obesity is becoming a serious problem in our society. Because of rapidly growing speed, bad food environment and harm of obesity itself, we have to keep fighting with obesity and let people live in a healthier life. Therefore, I suggest collecting tax from sugar-sweetened drinks and setting up more parks to encourage people to do exercises.
