Inca Field Notes

C. Pre- Fieldwork

I selected this topic because I’ve always had an interest in Ancient Americas especially

the Incas. I’ve always had in interest in the Incas because they had an interesting way to live

through their daily lives. Also how the Incas had a similar lifestyle with the Aztecs. my

experience with this topic is there is a lot to say about the Incas. The knowledge I had about this

topic is that the Incas had a big impact to civilization compared to other Ancient Americas. They

are also right along the same importance the Aztec people had. My expectations when going to

the field museum Is to find A lot of information on the Incas at the Field Museum.

D. Observation/ Descriptions

The entrance to the Ancient America Exhibit time to read and find the Incas.

My Best Friend Jasmine & I On the main

level of the Field Museum She accompanied me to

the museum because she is interested in history &

loves to take adventures with me.

Information On Cuzco the empire capital city. Right below was a display of Pottery That the Cuzco empire had.

These Pottery Pieces Reflect the Impearl style associated with Cuzco.

South America had a lot of gold Deposit the Incas had rooms filled with Gold objects. They had more gold than the Aztecs. These are some Objects that were left in the Cuzco Empire. The rest were destroyed by Europeans. The Europeans melted the objects and turned them into gold bars.

This Image is showing stones which happen to be alpacas and llamas the Incas were Dependent when it came to these two animals. Llamas were used to carry good on the Inca roads and the alpacas were used as fine meat and wool.

This Picture shows a map and the rectangle is how much the Incas Civilization Claimed. The civilization stretched over 3,000 miles.

This picture shows the map ad where all the red lines are the represent all the roads the Incas built.

These are some tools the Incas Used. They were made out of stone.

This stone is Part of the road the Incas built that they used to travel and trade amongst each other and other civilizations.

These are the tools that were used to make the Quipu.

This is a basket that kept Quipu materials to make one.

This is a Quipu which was a bunch of knots on yarn. Each knot had a connection and it was written as a letter. That a messenger would carry and deliver to the person the message had to be delivered too.

This Picture is explaining how the Incas

were taxed on everything. Below the sign

is a woven shirt that showed officials and

to show off the highly skilled women who

can weave.

This Photo shows How the Inca civilization

was run. It’s a pyramid of the one with most

power which is the king and the bottom of

the pyramid is housekeepers.

This is New land the Incas Conquered which was located 500 miles away from Cuzco. Huánuco Pampa was build on a high plateau. Huánuco Pampa was also spit up into four areas. That is what is being shoed in this picture.

These were the houses the Incas in Huánuco Pampa lived in. This picture is showing models that the Incas Built before building the houses.

In this picture is a drawing made by Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala who was born into the noble and around the time where the Spanish conquest was happing. Felipe would send letters to the king of Spain writing about the injustice. Felipe was kind of an activist in a way that we view in modern day society.

Ancient Americas Exhibit. In the background is a totem poll.

D iii. Exhibit and Artifact Analysis

This exhibit Was located on the main floor of the museum the exhibit was very dim and

had a bunch of low lights when you are walking through. When you get to each section

everything that is displaced is also under a low light. Except the signs with writing on them they

had bright lights so you can read clearly. The central theme of the exhibit would be all

civilizations in the Ancient Americas. I feel like Ancient Americas was focused more on the

Spanish speaking culture. It mostly attracts Spanish speaking people.

E. Post-Fieldwork Reflections

Before going to the museum I did do research on the Inca Civilization and I was hoping

the websites I did read were correct. I was hoping that I would learn more and see more in person

on the sculptures and items Incas used. To an Extent I was correct that the Incas was an

Important civilization. I was also correct that they were very similar to the Aztecs to a certain

extent. A challenge was I thought the Section of the Incas would have been a little bit larger than

the other civilizations. It happens to be small and it was the same sizes to the other civilizations.

My research methods were I would read the most recent articles about the Incas and see if

anything new could have been discovered. I didn’t really find anything so I just kept looking for

articles that were history based websites etc.

The representation of the culture through material artifacts would be breathtaking. It

amazed me how each civilization had different tools and had different techniques to survive in

different climates. Everything that was in the exhibit was also cool because not only were there

pictures it was also a real life artifact. One thing I did notice Ancient America Exhibit you could

get a basic admission ticket and go in but for other exhibits like Mummies, or China you had to

have a special ticket. I found that to be Strange but I get it the museum has to attract people in

somehow.
