Practicum Experience

Practicum Objectives

Learning objective one: To explore the significance of electronic health records in improving quality of life and positive patient outcomes. I believe that my practicum experience will give me insights into ways in which electronic health records (EHRs) can provide sufficient information in formats that are not possible with the facility previous paper charts since they have recently transitioned to EHRs (Manca, 2015). This objective is in line with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essential IV, which advocates for the widespread adoption of information technologies and systems for the enhancements and transformation of health care (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2006). According to the AACN Essential IV, DNP scholars should be differentiated from others through their capacity to utilize and operate information technologies to support and enhance patient care and health systems and offer leadership within health systems and scholarly contexts (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2006). Furthermore, DNP graduates should be capable of employing new knowledge, manage personal and aggregate-level data, as well as evaluate the efficiency of patient care.

Learning objective two: To understand how the adoption of electronic health records promotes patient safety. Most studies on patient safety often revolve around inpatient care. However, not much has been explored on how these technologies can be used to reduce common medical errors and inaccuracies that pose safety concerns to patients and health professionals. In many primary health care settings, electronic health records have not yet been embraced. As such, these institutions are still vulnerable to safety concerns such as dosing errors, failure to identify and deter fatal diseases, as well as delays in treatment (Tanner et al., 2015).
