Fiction: The Flower 1973

Name: Waleed Aldaraai

Plot:

In “the flower” story, there was ten years old girl who left her poor family in the dark. She heads to the woods in the middle of the night to grape her favorite flowers. By noon, she reached about a mile away from home. When she circled back to her family, she stepped through a dead man's skull, it seemed that the man has been dead for a long time. He was tall and all of his teeth were broken, and there was a pink rose has grown up nearby, which made Myop pick it. However, she noticed there was an old rope also nearby the dead body, which was the rotted remains of a noose. Myop noticed there is another rope she laid down her beautiful flowers then the summer was over.

Character:

Myop, ten years old African American child

The dead man

Setting:

America

Summer of 1973

Point of View:

Third- Person point of view

Symbolism:

Flowers: it symbolize Myop’s innocence who sees the world in a beautiful sight and ignore the bad things in her life.

The woods: it symbolize the world that surround Myop, which have many things hidden for Myop. It could be good or worse

Theme:

Losing childhood

Discrimination against African Americans

Style:

Narrative and descriptive story

Tone:

The tone of the story was calm and it changes from idyllic to annoying in the end of story.

Irony:

Innocence :

Myop sees only the beauty in her day, and she doesn’t notice the bad things around her. For example, she felt “light and good in the warm sun.” Myop was “ten, and nothing existed for her but her song, the stick clutched in her dark brown hand, and the tat-de-ta-ta of accompaniment.”

She doesn’t notice “the rusty boards of her family’s sharecropper cabin.”

Overall effect:

A child ruptures his innocence instead of enjoying the beautiful world.
