Research questions on the 12 step program
How effective is the program?
Is it an evidence-based program?
How much does the program cost?
Summaries of the two interventions and their respective research regarding the effectiveness
The first intervention uses cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), which has been effective
according to the research presented by Hofmann et al. (2012). In the study, CBT showed a higher
response rate and matched the problems experienced by the patients. Likewise, CBT was widely
applied to several problems, from substance abuse to mental health issues. The therapy is also
applicable for low-income persons, and it has been deemed to have no to minimal side effects
throughout the patient's recovery process. Enough research is also provided in the article to back up
the intervention.
The second intervention is the 12 step facilitation program applied by social workers in
helping patients with substance use disorders. The program is very affordable and is also known as
a low-cost community program. There are many active involvements in the 12 step program in the
research conducted by Kelly et al. (2013).
Recommendations for Tiffani's social worker that address the following:
Factors to consider when choosing between the two interventions
The factors to be considered will include the cost-effectiveness of the program. A good
program should not cost much because the treatment may be prolonged, thereby inconveniencing
the patient. Another factor to be considered is the program's quality for which it should be
evidence-based to show its effectiveness in quality performed studies. Another important factor is
3
that the program should match the patient's condition to avoid irrelevancy and unnecessary costs
since there will be no positive outcomes. Lastly, one should consider the organizational set of
resources offered by the program.
The social work skills that the staff would require to implement the intervention
Some of the social workers' skills include decision-making and analytical skills to enable
them to assess the interventions for the clients. Likewise, the social worker should have good
communication skills that will be needed to educate and convince the patients on the best program
to peruse with (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2018). Substance
abuse and management skills are also essential. They should also have research-based skills to
source and analyze the programs' effectiveness based on the Evidence provided in the research.
The training required to implement each intervention
The training required to implement the CBT is the psychology training to study the
patients' behaviors and reaction towards stimuli (Small et al., 2007). On the other hand, the training
needed for the 12 step program includes therapy and clinical trials and tests.
An evaluation of evidence-based practice based on your reaction to the experience, in which
you address the following questions:
Would you, as a beginning researcher, have enough knowledge to benefit from researching
evidence-based practices? Why or why not?
Yes, I have many benefits to gain from the Evidence-based researchers to help me develop
future credible research that can be backed up with substantial Evidence. Another benefit is getting
enough information to present my future research to agencies for approval (National Association of
Social workers, n.d.). Likewise, I have learned that Evidence-based research can improve the
4
public's trust and confidence in given interventions. There are also the cost benefits of Evidence-
based programs.
How might the research that you conducted increase your confidence in the intervention with
Tiffani?
The research conducted has enabled me to effectively handle tiffanies situations by using
Evidence-based interventions (The California Evidence-based Clearinghouse for Child Welfare,
2018). The interventions will work effectively because they have been tested and positive results
seen in different scenarios that apply to her substance abuse conditions.
Is the information provided enough to decide on interventions? Why or why not?
Yes, the information provided is enough for decision making on tiffanies conditions
because there is enough Evidence to support the interventions. As the social worker had stated, the
twelve-step model is also an Evidence-based model. Therefore, patients only need to be educated
and informed of the models well before use.
