Irony

“Annabel Lee” is a poem that has made good use of irony. The poem uses irony to increase the understanding of the reader as far as the topic of discussion is concerned. One of the lines that represent irony is, “The angels, not half so happy in Heaven” (Stanza 3, line 1). The irony of the line can be linked to beliefs that people hold about heaven and everything heavenly. In reality, people believe that heaven is a place for people with a holy heart. Therefore, when the poet states that the angels were not happy, it means that his message is ironic when compared to beliefs held about heaven (Belsey, 2016).
