Corporate social responsibility in business
Introduction
Corporate social responsibility is defined in business sector as a complete submission by the business organization to behave and operate in an ethical manner in order to attain its commercial objectives. This concept enables the business enterprise to uplift the welfare of its employees, the living standards of their families. This report entails how the company should perform its daily activities in order to safeguard the prevailing society (Matten and Moon, 2004). In this report paper, two diverse theoretical frameworks regarding corporate social responsibility are discussed in detailed
. These theoretical model includes the ethical social responsibility and the economical social responsibility. Both of them contribute to the business continuity and success.
The above diagram illustrates various fields where corporate responsibility is exercised. Ethical responsibility model focuses on how to achieve a stronger self- restrain and perform duties that foster public opinion and safeguarding the interests of the stakeholders. The economic theoretical framework majorly focuses on the market factors and how to create wealth with regard to the views of the society where the company is situated.
This report analyses various ways on how the electronic and computer producing company should undertake in order to retain its customers as well as considering the policies made local inhabitants. This paper also touches on how to practice corporate social responsibility in a business organization. This is because many investors have realized the importance of this act in any business set up (McWilliams, 2015). This topic makes the company accountable for the activities it performs, therefore all the companies focus on how to avoid activities that may lead them to trouble.
It is important for a business company to upheld ethical issues related to business in order to retain its customers, donors and secure new markets and partners. This is because almost all customers and donors normally consider the corporate social responsibilities of the organization before entering into business union.
Theoretical approaches on the corporate social responsibility
2. The theoretical model on ethical social responsibility
This theory elaborates the relationship between the society and the concern company. The company is required to operate in a way that pleases not on the directors but also the society. This is because the society is the main contributor towards continuation of the business activity and success. The business organization therefore owes the society a lot when it comes to business operations and interaction. During my analysis on the FujitsuCompany, it was clearly proven that business ethics are key since they are used to assess the progress of the organization in terms of sales and profits made by the company. The company deals with the manufacture of electrical and modern technological devices. It produces goods that can satisfy the demands of its consumers (Heald, 2018). This global company also offers required services to its consumers at affordable prices. Selling goods and offering services at considerate prices is considered ethical because since the company will not exploit the interests of the customers. The Fujitsu Company was regulated by the European Union from on the production of the poisonous elements and compounds like mercury, sulphur IV oxide and other toxic substances that are hazardous to human health when they are emitted to the atmosphere.
2.1 The procurement framework on environmental protection
During my analysis on the company and its operations in relations to the business ethics, it was clear that the company was aware of the effects of the poisonous chemicals and toxic chemicals on the environment and to the human health. Fujitsu Company was therefore able to come up with a business procurement that will provide productive guidelines on how to make the environment free from toxic compounds (Kutami and Yamazaki, 2009). The company realized that emission of dangerous chemicals to all types of environment like the water bodies, air and soil may present tremendous consequences to the business operation. These risks include the penalty due to legal action and the risk of losing its customers. Another major risk that normally arise is the risk of corporate social responsibility. This is a serious risk that the company feared so much, therefore putting more focus on how to avoid it at all cost.
This procurement policy enabled the company to purchase materials from suppliers with environmental control framework in order to avoid illegal business activities. This ensured that there is no toxic product dealt with in the entire supply chain. The processing of these materials does not lead to emission of hazardous waste materials to the environment. Fujitsu Company also requested all of its suppliers to ensure that the products they supply are free from these poisonous chemicals and to regulate the use of the products that emit toxic waste products. In this case, the company ensures that the social responsibility is achieved through various ethical tasks performed by various stakeholders and the management. Fujitsu also assesses the operations of its business partners and suppliers in order to examine if the activities undertaken by these organizations are ethical or not. This ensures that the name of the company is not maligned due to the irresponsible activities done by the partners and the suppliers. The brand of the company is maintained and even improved. The company deals in products that are free from Lead unlike other companies dealing with the same goods. This makes Fujitsu Company to enjoy a lot of support and recommendations from the government, local and international consumers.
2.2 Manufacture of harmless products
This is another consideration made by Fujitsu Company on its ethical theoretical model. The products manufactured by this company include electrical appliances, computers and mobile phones. The company is not involved in production of illegal goods like drugs and weapons. Fujitsu deals with devices used in information technology as well as electrical appliances that are consumed both locally in Japan and globally. Fuji electrical Company normally conduct a commercial survey in order to examine and analyse the kind of products transacted by the suppliers and other business partners. The company suspends the branches that are suspected to be producing dangerous goods. This ensures that the company deals with the products that safeguards the interest of the people in the society. Fuji Company has set up regulations that governs the types of goods produced by its branches and other related sectors that uses the company’s brand name.
The health of the workers is also gathered for by this company because they are provided with the protective clothes and boots during the operation in order to reduce the injuries in case of an accident. These employees are also provided with medical covers when an employee is injured on the process of operation.
2.3 Social sustainability
Fujitsu majorly focuses on how to improve the lives of the people around the company and the entire Japanese. It has been observed to be among the leading companies in the world that have boosted the living standards of the local communities. This have been achieved by selling the finished products to the local people at a considerable prices as compared to the global markets (Epstein, 2018). The company will not realize some of its commercial objectives if it does not consider the interests of the local population because they are the leading group that determines the success of this business organization. This is because the local societies are the immediate factors that influence the business. Sustenance of community is important in order to avoid resentments and gain business support. It is not ethical for Fuji Company to exploit the immediate available resources in the region of operation without making the society one of the beneficiaries.
Fuji have been in a position to uplift the local and emerging industries in their operation. It is not right if this business company undermines the identity of the local firms and societies.
Equality is another component that have been observed with regard to social sustainability. During the examination and analysis done on this company, it is confirmed that the company provided equal chances for the local communities to secure various types of employment vacancies for them. This ensured continuous circulation of the available resources in that particular locality. The company also provides promotions to all employees depending on their tasks. This ensures team work and unity among all the company’s staff since equality is done for everyone.
2.4 Concern to the employees
This company is the leading company that values the interests of its employees. The managerial staff ensures that all the workers employed in various departments are heard and their views respected. They are also paid considerably according to the task done by an individual employee (Hancock, 2015). The payments are settled on time therefore motivating the employees and instilling morale on them. The management should not harass the workers since they may lose confidence on the bosses and the entire business company. Fuji have also been in a position to develop regulations that protect the employees from external threats and influences.
The company is liable for all the activities done by all the employees but within the institution’s premises. The employees are not accountable for any risk like explosion while testing a newly manufacture electrical appliance, therefore in case of an injury of the employee, the company normally provide medical insurance for the employee. The employees should be given time off as required by the law so that they can have time with their families and friends. It is not ethical to deny the employees time off since they require physical and mental relieve out of work so that they can regain the lost energy and break the monotony. This makes the workers creative, productive and strong (Tai and Chuang, 2014). In order for the company to be categorised in this ethical domain, it should therefore consider these factors since they assist in realization of business goals and success.
3.Economic theory on the corporate social responsibility
The main objective for all business organizations is to make profits. An organization will not be considered as a business enterprise if does not make profits from its operations. A company must make some profits in order to avoid being doomed and collapsing. In some cases, a company may decide not to make profits out of its business operation because of some various reasons.
This table shows the amount needed in order for the company to undertake successful corporate social responsibility. Some may be interested at providing important goods and services to the local people in order to boost their economic standards and their living standards(Nakamura, Moriizumi, Sato and Yamada, 2012). These non-profit organizations normally make profits from their independent operations apart from the business activities engaged in. Fuji Company is concerned with providing economically accepted goods and services to its customers.
The above graphic shows the trend in which the corporate social responsibility increased in the three years. This improved the financial status of the company as well as the society. In order for a company to attract as much as many consumers, it should consider their demands and put some measures on how to satisfy the needs of these clients. Since economic factor is one of the elements used to examine how the company is responsible to the nearby society and also the extend of business growth, it is pivotal to analyse it thoroughly.
Fuji Company operates on goods that give a lot of profit from their sale. The company should not take the opportunity for granted in order to exploit the locals. The company may decide to sell the electrical appliances and computers to the locals at a higher prices than that would have been received from the sale of the same goods in the international markets. This company is responsible for provision of goods and their related services to the community without any exploitation in order to boost the economic status of these local communities. The computers and electrical devices sold by Fuji Company should assist the people residing near the company and the entire Japanese to create wealth in various fields.
3.1Economic sustainability
Fujitsu Company focusses on how to make a stable economy from the sale of the manufactured computers and electronics both in domestic and foreign markets. In this case, this Japanese company have created plans that give room for prolonged and stable action in the business sector, therefore sustaining the economy of the company and the entire nation. The company normally conduct a commercial survey in order to investigate all the factors that interfere with the economic growth. This does not mean that the company invested so much on the projects that bring profits over a short period of time. The company have set up some projects that enables it to evaluate the common factors that hinder economic growth and how to eradicate them from the operation.
The above graph illustrates the investments made by Fujitsu Company in various countries. This ensures that the company does face a lot of losses or even running to bankrupt. The company have also ensured economic sustainability by avoiding dumping of toxic substances to the environment. This is because the environment is the main component of economic growth and exploitation since most of the resources are found on the natural setting therefore financial policies and terms caution the companies against the release and dumping of such chemicals.
3.2 Paying taxes to the nation
This is another economic responsibility of any business organization. Fujitsu Company normally pays a certain percentages of taxes depending on their returns to the government. This is important because it enables the government to expand other sectors like health and education. The Japanese government have benefited a lot from this company because of these taxes, therefore boosting the economy of the nation. Majority of the national infrastructures have been developed and improved as a result of this company, either directly or indirectly. The taxes collected from this company are used to construct roads and other transport models, therefore leading to economic growth.
3.3 Fair trade policy
Fujitsu Company have established a movement that entails an imperative that ensures sharing the available business opportunities and wealth among all financial enterprises dealing with the same products. This movement resulted to fair trading activities among all commercial institutions. Fujitsu Company normally consider the interest of the companies from developing countries and other emerging industries in japan by setting a standard and considerate prices for their products so that they can compete favourably with these underdeveloped business enterprises. It is not fair for this company to sell its electrical devices and computers at lower prices in order to secure all the customers. Fujitsu have conducted various meetings and conferences with both developed and developing companies in order to discuss matters arising from marketing and set up fair prices for similar goodsand services. The company respects the operations of other companies. This policy have ensured fair distribution of essential business resources. This matter reduces conflicts, anger, envy and resistance among the existing business companies since the interests of all the companies are gathered for in the policy. This policy is not exercised by all companies since some are established by capitalists but Fujitsu is not among these companies. Fair trade policy ensures that the interest of the consumers are also adhered to. Fujitsu have been selling its products at fair prices in order to avoid consumer exploitation. The company also operates on goods that satisfy the needs of the clients.
3.3 Elimination of business monopolism
Monopolism in business means taking the opportunity to provide the unavailable goods and selling them at a higher prices since no one produces them. Some companies may make unrealistic profits from the sale of some goods(Iankova, 2008). Fujitsu Company is against business monopoly. It manufactures different quality products that may not be produced by any other business organization but does not practice business monopoly. This is an economic responsibility of every business organization in order to boost the financial status of the society.
3.5 Control of the supply chain
Economic responsibility have also been witnessed in the management of the business supply chain that involves Fujitsu electrical company. The company is working with its suppliers in order to realize the importance of corporate social responsibility. This control policy promotes health relations between the company and the suppliers, therefore resulting meaningful coexistence among various business stakeholders. The system ensures fair and correct evaluation of the suppliers to be selected by the company. These two factors are very pivotal because they promote a sense of corporate social responsibility in the company. This business company should handle all matters arising from chain supply because they are important in every business operation. This directly affects some important social components like human rights, information systems and business ethics. The kind of suppliers to be selected by the company must support these social elements in order to achieve business direction and growth. The suppliers should not supply materials that interfere with the human rights and environmental conditions. Fujitsu normally select suppliers from the surrounding communities. This is important because these suppliers are familiar with the prevailing regulations that govern all business activities.
4. Discussion of the findings
During my analysis on this company, I came across some arguments that are against corporate social responsibility. These elements are contradicting because they oppose the ability of the companies to perform social activities. Some capitalist argue that the companies should engage purely in commercial operations and leave the social responsibilities to be performed by social organizations. Another statement that is against corporate social responsibility is setting high prices for various products so that the consumers can perform the task related to social responsibility instead of the business enterprise.
Another component that opposes corporate social responsibility is the desire by many companies to make much profits without considering the rights and interest of the local people. Some investors argue that corporate social responsibility may affect the financial status of a business organization(Carroll and Shabana, 2010). They therefore conclude that a business company should avoid corporate social responsibilities in order to compete favourably with other firms. It is also contradicting to mention that some capitalists cautions many business organizations not to pay taxes to the government since these taxes are used to develop the society.
5. Conclusion
Corporate social responsibility is an important model suggesting how a particular business entity is benefiting the society. This framework is, therefore, a task that should be done by any business organization in order to maintain the economy and achieve its business objectives. All companies should avoid engaging in activities that are harmful to the environment and to human health. The operations performed by the business enterprise should advance the society either directly or indirectly. This is achieved by accomplishing economic and legal responsibilities.
